My high school did Shakespeare not ACD and the damn Shakespeare was not in modern English...
we also learnt about the differences in American, British, Australian and Indian English... English is not as hard to learn as some people make it out to be...no subject
I've found that most native speakers tend to fall into one of two extremes when it comes to saying how difficult their language is to learn: "it's so hard; I pity anyone who tries to learn it" or "it's really easy; you'll pick it up in no time".

...anyway yes I am Norwegian and yeah Norwegian and English do share a lot of words*, say thank you to the Vikings for that I guess? And bokmål is the name of the written Norwegian, not the spoken just FYI. And I would assume standardized Norwegian is a lot easier than my dialect, but either way it isn't too bad. German is the same, I can understand a surprising amount of it.
Oh Thai is a lot more difficult I would imagine.
*English is for the Germanic language speakers the easiest language to learn. I guess it is true for all the Germanic languages really, I don't think I would have had a harder time learning German instead of English from 1st grade.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-06 01:39 am (UTC)(link)Yep I'm just learning Bokmål for writing and repeat whatever the nice people on the audio say, which reflects more or less what's written (though I can hear differences in pronunciation from person to person). I've had a look at some dialect comparisons and it makes my head hurt slightly so I'm just sticking with the "one" language for now til I get more confident and can learn the differences between some of the dialects.
Yeah I think the similarities with norsk are partly the Anglo-Saxon-Frisian invaders in Britain thing, and then Norse invaders/settlers later on. But then the Brits acquired French overlords and language, plus I think the Celts got some Latin in from the Romans before the Angles invaded. It's confusing.
I don't even want to think about the Thai dialects. Standard Bangkok is good enough for me right now!
