If you see that you might end up being like someone in the future, why not work to change it?

Five or six years ago, I was scared that I was going to grow up to be like my late maternal grandmother, who had mental health issues she refused to seek treatment for. She was jealous, controlling, angry, and caused a lot of strife in her family. I saw signs of similar issues (coupled with depression) and sought treatment. I will not be like her in that regard.

Off topic, but I've seen 1 episode so far and have become convinced Woody Harrelson's character is the killer. And now I don't want to watch anymore unless they kill my head canon. If someone could tell me whether my theory remains at least possible in the episodes aired so far I would appreciate it. Lol.

Minor spoilers

Well, obviously we do not know who did it yet, but...the more you see of him the more you realize he's not a nice guy, regardless of if he's a killer or not. So if that's your thing...

AYRT

I will delusionally take that as a resounding endorsement of my theory. *Wanders off to download episode 2*

Enjoy, anon, I think the series gets better and better.

The writer himself has said that if you pay close attention to the first episode, 85% of what happens is alluded to there. Remember what Marty says about the detective's curse: it always turns out to be right under your nose, but you just don't see it.

You should definitely keep watching because it's a wonderful show, but you should also keep an open mind. Despite what the writer says, you don't have enough info in one episode -- especially not about the characters of Marty and Rust -- to make a conclusion.

Yay, true detective secret!

OP, all I can say this: even if you are very similar to him (and we do have a tendency to project on characters we like, as fans), then he would still come across different people, situations, conflicts.

I mean, even if it would end badly for him - I'm presuming you're not currently chasing a sadistic killer who puts dead women on display, and therefore your situation s different.

Even if you were identical twins, then how he does (or does not) end does not reflect on you. You are your own person.

If you're anything like Rust, you have a bright mind that you can use for so many things.

minor spoilers here also

Unrelated to your secret, but I had a really awkward time watching the sex scenes in the last episode with my mother-in-law. LOL

Well, first, two questions:
1. Are you a cop or in a profession where you regularly see the worst of humanity?
2. Are you an alcoholic or addict or some sort?

I ask these questions because these factors contributed significantly to Rust's decline. Also, I haven't seen all of True Detective yet but my impression is that we're sort of supposed to start off seeing Marty as the everyman character through which we view the events and other characters, but as things unfold you slowly start to realise that Rust is the character who is actually easier to identify with and who sees the strangeness of everything in the show more clearly. So, we're sort of all supposed to identify with Rust to a certain extent - and we're not all going to end up like him, are we?

Another thing: when I find myself getting too cynical and making myself depressed, I find sometimes it helps to just sit myself down in the sun somewhere, and to think about all the reasons I am lucky and grateful to be alive, and all the god things there are in the world that continue to exist regardless of whether life has meaning or not. If that makes sense.

A True Detective secret, finally!

If you've kept watching the show, OP, you'll know there's more to Rust's character than just what we see in the first 3 episodes. The thing about Rust is that he really doesn't care what other people think of him, just like Marty said in his assessment to their boss. He's not interested in making friends. And I think the reason Rust is the way he is has more to do with how he isolates himself than with how he thinks or what he says. I think if you have friends, relationships, or are even at all part of a community, then you're probably not going to end up like Rust.
