Maybe because Sam was forced to marry someone he did not want to because of mind control? Also because it made Becky into a dangerous crazy person. Given that she is basically a representation of fandom, a lot of people took offense to that.

She was always representative of the CRAZY side of fandom, though.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-07 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
she doesn't exactly have a non-caricature foil though

unless she's got one since I stopped watching?

Charlie is probably the closest. She definitely seems to represent fan-culture, even though it isn't exactly Supernatural fan culture.

Yes but there is a difference between being a slash writing, fangirl and being a "kidnap you and force you into marriage" fangirl. They changed her into Annie Wilkes.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-07 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
There's still a huge difference between "kind of insane but with hearts in basically the right place" which she was before the wedding episode, and how she was portrayed in the wedding episode. It's a very different kind of crazy.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-07 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
The writers were making fun of the "crazy" fangirls, not the cool ones like us...? Is this like jokes about hairy lesbian feminists?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-07 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
This. Plus, the implications of non-con that were handled for the LOLZ were pretty horrible.

Yeah I think there was one throw away line about she didn't get to consummate their marriage.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-07 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Thank goodness. Must have missed that.

I am just going from memory. And I only watched that episode once (kinda).

Yeah, they kind of made a point of saying that it wasn't consummated.

Becky was a GOOD character in the earlier seasons. She was a lot of fun. This episode totally ruined it by turning her into an utter creep.

I was getting creep vibes from Becky from the get go, though. So this episode, as ghastly as it is, didn't really surprise me.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-07 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
There are degrees of creepy, though. There are lots of people who act super-creepy at cons I wouldn't assume aren't just waiting to commit kidnapping and assault.

And there's the fact that the show didn't seem to realize this was an additional level of creepy.

True, but the way this show handles things, I just expect them to go to outrageous extremes.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-07 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
...Becky terrified and creeped me out from the get-go. I figured it was a matter of time before she sold her soul to a demon for the Winchesters, given how insanely fannish she was. She was clearly always the extreme of extreme for fangirls to me.
