Maybe because Sam was forced to marry someone he did not want to because of mind control? Also because it made Becky into a dangerous crazy person. Given that she is basically a representation of fandom, a lot of people took offense to that.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-07 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
She was always representative of the CRAZY side of fandom, though.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-07 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
she doesn't exactly have a non-caricature foil though

unless she's got one since I stopped watching?

Yes but there is a difference between being a slash writing, fangirl and being a "kidnap you and force you into marriage" fangirl. They changed her into Annie Wilkes.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-07 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
There's still a huge difference between "kind of insane but with hearts in basically the right place" which she was before the wedding episode, and how she was portrayed in the wedding episode. It's a very different kind of crazy.

This. Plus, the implications of non-con that were handled for the LOLZ were pretty horrible.

Becky was a GOOD character in the earlier seasons. She was a lot of fun. This episode totally ruined it by turning her into an utter creep.

I liked, too, Anon. In fact, I tend to be a BIG fan of Sam being tied up for any reason. I'm not even sorry. I'm just sad that Becky didn't take advantage.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-07 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
This is me nodding vigorously.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-07 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I liked where they left Becky's character and that episode kind of shit all over it.

Even setting aside the part where it seems like an extremely mean-spirited swipe at fandom, I just don't like that aspect of it.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-07 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
They took a relatively quirky, innocent character and turned her into a psychopath. Someone who was willing to do horrible things to get what she wanted.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-07 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-07 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
You don't know fans in fandom like that?

Just me then? Okay.

I thought this episode was hilariously wonderful in a horrible horrible way. I liked it.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-07 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I enjoyed the parts that Crowley and Becky's turned-out-to-be-a-demon friend were in and Dean's reaction shots were funny at times. Other than that, I didn't hate it, but the Becky-Sam noncon thing creeped me out. I know they were playing it for laughs, but I didn't think it worked that well.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-07 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I generally enjoyed it too, OP, but I was also irked by how they changed Becky's character into a psycho.

Most reactions in SPN fandom are hugely overblown though, so it really helps to take anything that is the 'general consensus' there as either, at best, an extreme exaggeration of how a reasonable fan would react to the episode, or at worst simply madness.

I thought of it as just how much the writing in the show has turned to shit

(Anonymous) 2014-03-07 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I went and rewatched that episode, thanks to this secret. I forgot how gorgeous Guy was.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-07 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Had Becky been a man and Sam a woman, people wouldn't find it so "funny" now, would they?

Sorry I found the episode cringeworthy tbh, and not because of her fan behavior but because she kidnapped and drugged Sam and it was played as cute and funny instead of how really skeevy it actually was.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-07 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
EXACTLY! You could tell the writers were trying to make it a funny episode (and I admit her earlier fannish shenanigans were pretty funny) but kidnapping and drugging someone isn't actually fun. Like ever.

[personal profile] tabaqui 2014-03-07 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
I enjoyed it even as i despaired over what they did to Becky and the non-con skeev of it. But it was still fun. Just not a high point in television viewing.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-07 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't like the episode very much (season 7 was sooo hard to get through) but mostly because I thought it was boring. For a kidnapping, drugging, demon deal episode they tried to make it kinda funny - but it just fell completely flat.
melissatreglia: (supernatural - sam & dean stargazing)

[personal profile] melissatreglia 2014-03-07 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
That's my opinion too (both on this ep and on S7 in general). Becky always had a few screws loose, but not like this. And nobody would've been laughing if Sam was "Samantha" and Becky was "Billy" instead.

For an episode that was suposed to be "funny," it was unintentionally creepy with a side of Dullsville.

Though I did like Crowley's monologue in this ep: "THIS ISN'T WALL STREET, THIS IS HELL! WE HAVE A LITTLE SOMETHING CALLED INTEGRITY!"

Season 7, overall, was just a complete disappointment. It could've been so much more than it became.
