You're not seeing a completely different show, you're seeing the one most non-fandom and non-Johnlock shippers see.

Pretty much this. And we all know friendships are underrated in fandom.

Yep, I agree.

Yep. Sounds like the Sherlock I watch.

Yeah, I also see that non-Johnlock version of the show, OP. I see fanbaiting, I see a few too many "I'm not gay!" from John, but those have not equated to Ho Yay for me. No idea why: I slash in other fandoms, but this is one that my goggles just don't work on.

I think (and I still haven't caught up to season 3) that it's just a little too obvious we're being baited in Sherlock, and that's...distasteful? Like, piss or get off the pot, y'know?

This is the version I seem to have read instead. I found myself eye rolling so many times, and just personally hoping Mary could branch out and have a series of her own.

THIS!

[personal profile] escriboconundedo 2014-03-08 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
to some people, 'best friends' = 'secretly in love.'

[personal profile] seventh_seal 2014-03-08 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Isn't that true with most slash pairings? They're "just" friends (or enemies or have an emotionally complicated relationship that is deep but not sexual) in canon. The shippers take it a step further.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-08 07:17 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, I love slash but cannot even remotely see it for this ship.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-08 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
IKR? It's silly to think Johnlock is ever going to happen, especially when you consider that Ben C. almost certainly won't want to play a gay right after his star turn in the Turing biopic.

To be honest, I can easily see Sherlock being in love with John, but have trouble seeing John as sexually interested in him. At best, an awkward "only when we're drunk" sort of thing.

That being said, John and Sherlock have more chemistry than John and Mary, imo. I liked Mary, but didn't really understand John's relationship with her.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-08 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
I fail to see why you're making such a fuss about a pairing you don't ship?

I can sort of see it but I don't ship it. Benedict and Martin play off each other pretty well and I guess this is one of those speculative ships people have been stewing over for years.

I actually ship them and I still think a lot of the meta around S3 is reaching to a ridiculous degree (and I also really enjoyed S3 - haters to the left...)

(Anonymous) 2014-03-08 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I think a lot of people see it that way, it's just that fandom is more vocal about the shipping angle and once you have slash goggles on, every teensy flickr of emotion that happens between two guys is more evidence for the ship. That, and some people have difficulty processing the idea that two people of any gender can have strong feelings and loyalty for one another, yet not boink nor secretly want to boink.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-08 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
I’ve read the meta too (although after I saw the season) and I don’t see it, either. I could kind of see it in the first two seasons, but not at all in this one.

Really, season 3 is such an odd duck like this in a number of ways. The people who see more Johnlock than ever versus those who don’t see any. Those who see Mary as awesome and those who see her as a psychotic abusive murderer. Those who think the baby was the dumbest idea ever versus those who’re looking forward to Sherlock babysitting. The people who thought it was the best of the three and those who thought it was the worst.

It’s so odd. I don’t remember any show I’ve seen being this divided in terms of what people saw when they watched it.

CAN I GET AN AMEN?

Literally, this is me. Down to the "I guess I can ship this/see what they're saying" to in the end thinking "SHERLOCK [the show] is about friendship".

It makes me think of my best friend and me quite often, S3 with the most moments, particularly the first and second episodes.

You're not alone OP.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-08 07:40 am (UTC)(link)
Welcome to fandom. Where reality is what your imagine it to be.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-08 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I see an epic friendship too, I don't get Johnlock at all.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-09 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
No, I'm with you OP. I enjoy the show for being a great show, and a terrific friendship.

But I have trouble seeing a lot of the slash in shows that other people see. I write a lot of slash, but that's just me wanting to slash characters I love. About the only true slash I ever have seen was in Starsky & Hutch. Now *that* was subtext out of control. I didn't even need goggles for that shit.
