This whole discussion is the biggest scream of "CONTEXT MATTERS" I have ever seen.

Any piece of media can be interpreted as feminist by someone willing to make the arguments for it. That means it becomes feminist by that person's standards. There are no hard and fast rules about what's empowering or equalising for every single woman or even womens' culture.

Basically, Sailor Moon may not have been created with a feminist bend in mind, but that doesn't mean girls can't feel empowered by it. That doesn't mean girls can't take it as a positive inspiration. That doesn't mean it 'is' or 'is not' feminist, just that it can support and inspire girls just as much as it can reinforce gender roles and advertise femininity.

The sooner people accept that, the better.

The problem is that people don't claim it as feminist for just themselves. And that is very damaging in Japan, to idealize what is basically the status quo already as feminist.

It'd be like, back before the huge feminist movement in America, idealizing the 1950s housewife as this huge ode to femininity and the ideal as opposed to choice and then nothing changes.
