Re: What non-canon slash pairings do you think are almost-canon?

[personal profile] caecilia 2014-03-10 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
The only ones I can think of were actually semi-confirmed. Nevermind, I thought of a bunch more as I was writing this.

Chad and Ryan from High School Musical. They sang about "showing you how I swing" and then they switched clothes. Semi-confirmed because I do believe Lucas Grabeel was playing Ryan as gay, and in the stage adaptation the director made it canon by showing pictures of guys in Ryan's locker.

Julian and Garak in DS9. Because the actors were playing it that way but the writers/network/whatever put a stop to that. And then gave Julian a really, really close bromance with Miles. And I'm sure they knew what that looked like, considering Miles even said on a couple of occasions he wished his wife was more like Julian. And Star Trek pretty much invented slash, so. Yeah.

Also I'm pretty sure the actress who played Romulan Senator lady was playing her as having a crush on Kira. In any case they had mad chemistry.

Marceline and Bubblegum, yes, pretty sure that's endorsed by people who work on the show/comics.

Glinda and Elphaba although the author of the book is gay, and I'm pretty sure he has said that it was there. As for the musical, I think Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth both said if things had gone differently, they would have been together.

Jet was in love with Zuko, you cannot convince me otherwise.

Gimli and Legolas totally married.

Pintel and Ragetti from Pirates of the Caribbean. Captain Jack Sparrow and Cutler Beckett were totes exes.

In Harvest Moon 64, I was always pretty sure that Rick (the hardware store guy) was gay, from the way he would act when you showed him the blue feather, and the fact that he never settled down. And then you have Cliff, obviously unhappy in his marriage with Anne. I kinda always figured he was really in love with Rick (who happens to be Anne's cousin, iirc.) Yes, they probably had a secret thing.

As Told By Ginger. Miranda wants Courtney all to herself, Courtney is in love with Ginger, who might not be straight, but is oblivious to Courtney's feelings. Carl is gay. Blake is also gay. Macie is gay and eventually she and Courtney get married and go to France together. But now I am getting too much into my own shipping preferences. Courtney being in love with Ginger was definitely intentional on someone's part.

eta: Both Johanna and Madge from The Hunger Games. They just pinged me. Shame they never met.

Jet was totally infatuated with Zuko. I'm not sure if I'd go as far as to call it love though. Then again, it has been years since I've seen the series. I ship them so fucking hard either way.

I guess they didn't really have enough time together for it to be "love". But it could have been. It could have been.

Oh Gimli and Legolas. Yes. The author totally didn't intend it but I do not care in the slightest.

Legolas and Gimli are my forever OTP. I was so disappointed when the movies came out and everyone was shipping Aragorn/Legolas instead. Just...there needs to be more Legolas/Gimli. THEY WERE AS GOOD AS CANON, GUYS.

I remember shipping them back in the olden days and finding like... one author who wrote it amidst the sea of Aragorn/Legolas :| (Theresa Green I believe it was, author of the User Manual series). Urgh, one does not simply sail into the west with someone, guys.

There were definitely a few Legolas/Gimli gems to be found, but compared to Aragorn/Legolas...it wasn't much. Which is sad. So very sad.

Urgh, one does not simply sail into the west with someone, guys.

I know, right? That takes commitment! You don't sail into the west for just anyone! As far as I'm concerned, you need epic amounts of love for that to even be a thing you consider asking/doing.

The prevalence of Aragorn/Legolas was the reason I didn't get into the fandom until 2004. I ended up reading it, but I had to go through the whole range of Elfslash to get there first.

But while I don't mind Legolas/Gimli, it was never one of my favourites. Still isn't, even now, maybe because I never truly connected with those two.

Re: What non-canon slash pairings do you think are almost-canon?

[personal profile] elaminator 2014-03-10 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
That might be why, then. Legolas and Gimli were always two of my favorite characters, and I have a huge thing for pairings where two characters grow from hating each other to loving each other (above all else). Then there's the inter-species part of it, which just makes it all the more interesting and appealing to me.

No pairing is for everyone, but it does sometimes bum me out when I think of how good those two were, and how little fic there is. *sigh*

Lol, Legolas/Gimli is why I got into the fandom. It was the height of my slash goggles phase and they were on a horse together. I read all the fics and the books just for them. It's a little awkward when RL people ask me if I like Tolkien.

Re: What non-canon slash pairings do you think are almost-canon?

[personal profile] caecilia 2014-03-10 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not really that into Tolkien. I tried to get into it when the movies were coming out, and later took a college class on it, but I mostly just think it's okay. I saw the first Hobbit movie but am choosing to skip the others until ten years from now when someone makes me watch them or something. So honestly if I' in this fandom at all it's for the Legolas/Gimli. I've read other ships for both characters, because I was 12 and needed my slash fix, but yeah, Aragorn/Legolas is just...kind of boring? I like them as bros, though.
