I've only asked myself this: how is it still on air? It seems like an unwritten rule that the show must not end or something, every year tumblr starts coming up with ideas for the new Doctor and I'm always wondering HOW. I don't think there's something else in tv that comes close in terms of length? Not even soap operas I think?

Not that I'm an expert in tv, far from that, but I have always wondered about this show.

I don't get it either :/ But suggesting that it should end usually results in rage, so...

Well it was off the air for a long time, in terms of the new series it's coming up on it's 8th year, which is still relatively small compared to classic who.

It can and has ended before, the new series basically brought new life into it, and fans of the series have gotten used to it being back again.

Don't ask me why it works, it just does. It helps that actors and writers are always changing, it's similar to a soap in that way where you are following the same basic plot and same basic characters but they can keep it going by changing the actors every few series.

Ah ok, I saw that the first ep aired in 1963 so I was seriously wondering if EVERY year since then a new season had been aired, LOL. If it doesn't air every other year than it makes a bit more sense in my head (almost).

(Anonymous) 2014-03-11 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it wasn't on air between 1989 and 2005... plus the series/seasons aren't that long (compared to US shows).

Yeah, I wasn't quite aware of that. That makes a bit of difference indeed. I thought it had been on non-stop since the sixties!

SFAIK, the only UK series that's done that is 'Coronation Street' (a soap). And it's still going.

ETA: UK. The poster below me mentioned GH (General Hospital?) that has also been running forever.

Soap operas definitely do. Not so much in terms of years, but in terms of episodes, they very much eclipse the length of DW. GH for example has essentially run five days a week/52 weeks a year since 1963. Their most prolific actor has chalked up over 1700 episodes and he has only been there since 1993.

Not that I'm saying soap operas are the greatest at coming up with ideas or anything, but....

but in terms of episodes
I should probably shut up and go to bed tonight, of course the difference is in terms of eps. SO are usually daily I think. I'm seriously terrible at these things though, I only ever watch things on my laptop... tv has stopped existing in all its forms a long time ago for me. In my defense, it is utter crap where I live.

"GH for example has essentially run five days a week/52 weeks a year since 1963"
Amazing. I always ask myself, how do these actors cope with the fact that they basically have another personality which is almost as meaningful as their own? Every day for years... I can't even tell if it would be a benediction or utter doom. It's not like SO themes are even interesting or stimulating.

Yup. Soaps are daily. I went through a period in high school where I watched quite a few of them. And, honestly, I always wondered how soap opera actors dealt with the grind. I mean a movie takes months to film two hours. A television show takes a week to film an hour. Soaps film an hour a day. With pretty much no breaks. As I said, that one actor has filmed over 1700 episodes. That seems like an awful lot of time to be someone you are not.

I feel like soaps probably end up using a lot of first (maybe second) takes. If you put it into context, the average work day is 8 hours long, so I think it's pretty doable when the director isn't as picky.

Partly funded by the government? CBC airs stuff that no one watches, ever, but it repeats in endless syndication, and no one can figure out why. Isn't BBC a public broadcaster as well? They're basically fun
