Re: TMI question thread

Since we're TMI here and talking about vaginas, I might as well! I've wanted to ask this for a while but I've been too embarrassed to make my own thread.

About 3-4 weeks ago, I got some amoxicillin to try and treat another symptom that my doctor thought was an infection, but it wasn't (that's a different thing entirely). I'm not allergic to penicillin and I've taken amoxicillin before, but for whatever reason, it totally fucked me up. I started feeling sick and weak, the normal bacteria areas seemed to just freak out, and my vagina started doing...well, what it did. I have a spot at the bottom of my vagina opening that either gets irritated or tears when I have sex with my hubby. Before this happened, it had probably been two weeks or so since we'd last done the deed, so I was surprised when that spot all of a sudden started itching really badly. I felt around down there and realized that spot has swollen up into a lump. It itched so bad that I scratched it once or twice over the next two days. That third day, the whole vagina area was swollen and all of the skin was very dry. I didn't realize how dry until I was scratching another part of it and my hand came back bloody.

I've never had a yeast infection before and my gyno is 45 minutes away (it's so hard to find a new one even if the one you have is totally inconvenient) and even so, there weren't any open appointments for at least a week. I have a coworker that swore it was because of the antibiotic and if I just did the 7 day treatment, it'd be okay. So I spent $20 that I didn't really have to get the OTC treatment and tried it that night.

Never ever ever in my life have I experienced such an excruciating itching sensation. Everything seemed okay until the medicine started to, eh, seep? And then the opening started itching so horribly that I could only take it for about 15 minutes before I'd hopped in the shower and washed it all off, then had a good cry because I had no idea what was going on. I threw the rest of the medicine away.

Well, that was several weeks ago. The itching subsided a few days after I tried the treatment, and the swelling went down maybe four or so days ago. The oddest thing was that when I would clean myself after urinating or whatever, the skin wasn't slick and smooth. It felt like it was catching. I'm assuming the area was dry because I found lots of small white skin peels down there when I took a shower.

I guess my question is...what the fuck was that? Did I just have to get through whatever that was? Is it safe for me to have sex with my husband again? I don't notice any pain or itching or discharge or swelling. About the only odd thing is that my urine kinda smells icky. Nothing hurts.

And the symptom that the antibiotic was supposed to fix is still there, ha ha. I can't win for losing.

TL;DR: Took antibiotics, vagina started swelling and itching. Yeast infection medicine made it way way worse. Afraid to have sex now.

Antibiotics can really mess with the balance of healthy bacteria in your body.

I wouldn't try any more over the counter products or any feminine hygiene soaps or lotions until you've been to see your gyno. You might end up aggravating the problem further. (pharmacy employee who has seen this happen before, here!)

In the meantime, you can try taking some probiotics or adding some yogurt to your diet, and if it is a yeast infection, cutting back on yeasty food and sugars and drinking plenty of water might help. Keep an eye (and a nose) on your pee, too. Sometimes vaginal issues and UTIs happen together.

Yeast and bacterial infections (even if they weren't originally transmitted through sex) can spread through sexual contact (even oral!) so I would probably hold off until you've talked to your gyno, and keep any cuts on your hands covered because yeast can infect those too.

I hope this is resolved quickly for you.
