[Game of Thrones]

I feel like this sometimes, and then I feel guilty about it, because I'm not usually a spiteful person.

I sometimes hope that Dany turns out not to be the Prince That Was Promised for the same reason.

I've heard of worse reasons to want something.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-18 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm. I'm not sure how much his parentage is relevant to the Rhaegar/Lyanna ship.

It is a fact that Lyanna ran off with and/or was abducted by Rhaegar. This is true whether or not she had a child fathered by Rhaegar.

We do not know whether it was an elopement or an abduction. This question would not be answered by the existence or nonexistence of a child.

I suppose it is relevant in that if Jon is ~*prophesied*~ and ~*the only one who can save the world*~, you could argue that what Rhaegar (and possibly Lyanna) did was ~*necessary*~ and ~*justified*~. Do Rhaegar/Lyanna shippers usually do that?

It's possible for Jon to be Rhaegar and Lyanna's son and also not to see Rhaegar and Lyanna as some sort of super romantic relationship.

Mostly thought I think R+L=J is real because it's the only way to explain Ned's behavior.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-18 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
This.

I agree about Ned's behavior.

Like honestly, if Jon were really Ned's bastard, I think he would have sent him to live with like Howland Reed to be raised.

The only reason he keeps him at Winterfell is because of his promise to Lyanna to protect her son, imo.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-19 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I kinda thought he could really be robert's son, but unless he and lyanna were married already, he'd only be another bastard, anyway... otherwise he could of course have jeopardized the lannister/baratheon alliance, which would be reason enough to keep him a secret, because we know how tywin and his men deal with kids that are in the way.
It's kind of a crazy idea, but I do think that Gendry, Jon (and also Podric Payne, for that matter) have this uncanny resemblance to oneanother. Coincidence, or intended casting? Hmmm...
I haven't read further than the second book, to avoid series spoilers, though, so I'm ignornt to a lot of things that happen, or are revealed, at a later point...

I almost can't believe I'm completely agreeing with you on something, especially with regards to the freakin' Starks, but yes.

And even if R+L was consensual, it's still messed up.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-18 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
This. Most people I talk to about it believe in R+L=J while also thinking that Rhaegar's actions were short-sighted at best and abduction-and-rape at worst.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-19 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
That's pretty much my point of view, yeah, and I believe there is no R+L=J is not canon.

I pretty much agree with everything in this comment. Especially in regards to Ned.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-19 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know about OP, but I've seen a lot of douchey behaviour where R+L=J is concerned even from people who don't ship Rhaegar and Lyanna as a romantic relationship (but they still behave like you're a "bad fan" if you don't like the R+L=J theory).

Also, shipper doesn't necessarily mean romantic shipping. You can ship something as a messed up unhealthy relationship, you can ship non-con etc.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-19 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Realistically, if Jon is Rhaegar and Lyanna's son, how would he--or anyone else--find that out? It's made pretty clear that Robert and Cat thought that Jon's mother was some random woman, and Ned's dead, along with all the Targaryens aside from Dany and Aegon, who wouldn't have been privy to Rhaegar's relationships. Which makes Ned the only person who'd know if Jon was Lyanna's son, and, uh, he's not talking any time soon.

So take heart! Whether R+L=J is canon or not, we will probably never know!

(Anonymous) 2014-03-19 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Howland Reed was at the Tower of Joy, and as far as we know he's still alive. Or Melisandre might see something in her flames, or Jon might form an inexplicable bond with Daenerys' dragons. GRRM has stated the Jon will learn of his parentage eventually, so we'll find out one way or the other.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-19 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Almost! But not quite: only ONE man is still alive who was there at the tower where Ned found Lyanna, and held her as she died, and made her a promise of a mysterious but implication-heavy nature, and could therefore tell any future questioners if sayyy she had a newborn baby boy with her. One witness. His name is Howland Reed....and we haven't met him yet, but that doesn't mean we won't, especially when we've been hangin' with his children since the second book

Howland Reed knows.

And lmao also Bran is a magic tree now! So who knows what he might be able to find out!

The above theories are definitely possibilities but I'm going to put my money on Varys. He knows everything.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-19 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
The R+L=J people are the most condescending douchebags in a fandom that has really no shortage of condescending douchebags, so I'm completely with you. I actually think that GRRM intended R+L=J, but I still hope it won't happen because those fans are the fucking worst and I want them to eat their words. After years of treating their THEORY like it's canon, bitching at anyone who disagrees with him and generally being gigantic douchenozzles about it.

They, uh, more or less confirmed the R+L=J thing on the show's DVD extras, though, so you're probably going to be disappointed.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-19 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
which dvd? where? *really interested*

Not sure what season it was, but it was the clips they added to the dvd extras. I watched them on youtube. They were all about the uprising against the Targs and made it reaaaaaaaaaaaalllllllyyyy obvious that the party line about R/L isn't true and that something else was going on between them.
