How about "close to your own damn age", and also legal? Stick with LEGAL first and then start actually paying attention to maturity. I've met 19-year-olds who had healthy relationships with 30+ folks, and I've met 25-year-olds who shouldn't even be dating at all.

If that's the way you want it, we should bring down the whole age of legal adulthood. Start having people get jobs, get their own apartments, serve in the military, pay their own taxes, etc, at 14, yeah? Why should the age of sexual consent just be lowered. Let's lower it all.

Not 14, but 16 would be fine. That's when kids finish compulsory education here and can get their first job.

Not sure where you're from, but in the US it absolutely doesn't work that way. Employment age is 14. Marriage age is 14-21 (varies from state to state; the younger end of the age range requires judicial approval, parental approval, and/or for the bride to be pregnant). School-leaving age is 16-18 (varies from state to state). Driving age is 16-18 (ditto). Age of consent is 16-18 (ditto). Legal age to join the military is 17 (with parental consent) or 18 (without parental consent). Legal age to buy tobacco is 18. Legal age to purchase or to star in pornography is 18. Voting age is 18. Legal drinking age is 21. Legal age to become president is 35.

There's simply no single line between childhood and adulthood in America's legal system. Which is as it should be, considering the wide range of rights and responsibilities that the above activities--and many others besides--encompass.

Because it's not the same. A 16 or 17 years old person is mature enough to decide if they want to have sex and understand understand the consequences of doing it. If they want to have sex with an adult, let them be. They aren't hurting themselves or anyone else.

How? How are any of the things I listed any more serious or mature than having sex? They're all adult things that can be horribly botched if you have no idea what you're doing, and have serious consequences. They're all things that really shouldn't be done while the actor is in the eye of the storm when it comes to their development as a person. They're not any different, and they shouldn't be treated any different.

I don't see why a person who is considered capable of making an important life decision that could seriously go wrong (pregnancy, STD, etc) can't be capable of any of the other things I listed.

Uh, most age of consent laws don't prohibit young people from having sex; they just prohibit them from having sex with older people. They're still very much at risk of becoming pregnant, contracting STIs, etc. from each other, regardless of the age of consent laws.

I don't know of anyone who killed several strangers and paralyzed themselves by having sex, but I do know someone who did it by driving. Driving a car is a LOT more dangerous than having sex - not just to you but everyone who shares a road with you.

Joining the military? Are you kidding? That often involves shooting people and being shot at. Again - hell of a lot more dangerous and life-altering than sex.

No. And I'd actually be okay with raising the age from 18 to 21 (except for someone being within a few years of the teen's age). Teenagers frontal lobes are not developed until their early 20s. They are literally incapable of thinking as rationally as an adult. It is very, very, very creepy for a fully grown adult to be in a relationship with a teen.

I think sex shouldn't be legal unless you get a government authorization after a psychological evaluation that certifies that you're mature enough.
