I find it highly doubtful that you've never met anyone with anxiety disorder outside of fandom. More than likely you have but they never mentioned it. Not all people are comfortable talking about it or want others to know.

However, some people are more open online. Either they have an easier time talking to people over the net or the (potential) anonymity appeals to them.

And everyone's anxiety is different too, some people have more severe cases than others.

That said, if someone says they have an anxiety disorder, I tend to believe them. There's no reason for me not to because even if they don't, believing them isn't hurting anything. It isn't really my business anyway (unless they want it to be). I'm sure some people lie about it, but there's nothing to be done about that.

Just like people saying they don't know any gay people!

...sorry

Well, I don't think people should be penalized for not knowing information that they were explicitly not given.

I'm not sure who's being penalized here. I was (playfully, in my mind) making a point about people assuming things about others because they're not immediately perceptible.

Who is penalizing who now? We're just saying you shouldn't make assumptions about anyone, because most people won't tell you their whole life story.

Yea, I wasn't implying that you're somehow wrong for not knowing about other people's problems, just that you can't know everything about a person just by being around them. Unless you're there for one of their anxiety attacks or they explicitly mention it to you, it's not surprising you might not realize that about someone.

That's probably true. But then, when I say that I've never seen anything like it or that I'm spooked, it isn't to imply that I don't believe people when they say they have anxiety issues. I'm actually more worried for it, because I have no direct experience with these attacks that many people online describe, and in RL, people would likely not tell me.

You can do some research if you're concerned about finding yourself in a RL situation with someone with an anxiety disorder?
