Well, I don't think people should be penalized for not knowing information that they were explicitly not given.

I'm not sure who's being penalized here. I was (playfully, in my mind) making a point about people assuming things about others because they're not immediately perceptible.

Who is penalizing who now? We're just saying you shouldn't make assumptions about anyone, because most people won't tell you their whole life story.

Yea, I wasn't implying that you're somehow wrong for not knowing about other people's problems, just that you can't know everything about a person just by being around them. Unless you're there for one of their anxiety attacks or they explicitly mention it to you, it's not surprising you might not realize that about someone.
