OP's great grandkid here.
(Anonymous) 2014-03-23 12:38 am (UTC)(link)Well one day he dropped his tools and a gorgeous brunette in a white dress helped him pick them up. He said he looked into her big brown eyes and knew he found the woman of his dreams. (He often tells me, "Nick, when the right woman comes along, you'll know.") They dated for a couple years. She didn't care he only had a tiny house and the clothes on his back. They were peas in a pod and peanut butter to jelly. They had a son and took him to see Pinocchio in theaters together. After, they both looked at the sky and wondered whether the stars were fairies. It was their little joke.
Great grandmama passed on in 1973. He visits her grave on their anniversary and her birthday. Always with red roses, her favorite. She still is his one and only.
My great granddad flew a plane in WWII. He train hopped as a kid and as an adult he built a tree house for a little boy whose family couldn't afford the lumber to do it - but at that time he could. He worked in construction after WWII. He said appreciate jobs when you have them. Use your hands and your brain.
He has shaken the hands of JFK, Nixon, Reagan and Clinton. He went to Woodstock. He saw the Beatles, Elvis, Janis Joplin, Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson in concert. He ate lunch next to Buzz Aldrin once.
Although great granddad has seen and done a lot, he always remembered being poor and always tells me I should give to others with less when I can. That's why he built the tree house for the little boy. He didn't have to. The boy's family thanked him by inviting him to dinner and while they didn't have much they gave anyway. Always be generous, the people you're generous to remember you and help you in return.
He's still mobile with a cane. He still drives. He helps in the soup kitchen at church whenever he can. His health is good and oh man is he funny. I showed him 2girls1cup as a joke. He watched it without a word and right after he squinted and said, "It looks like Congress trying to make a decision!" (I swear nothing grosses him out.)
He told me the story of Pinocchio all the time when I was a kid. We watched it together when I was 8 back in 1986. Now we watch it every Christmas. If I have kids, I'm going to continue that tradition.
At his age I know one day he might be gone. I don't take him for granted. I wish everybody had somebody in their family like him.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-23 01:30 am (UTC)(link)Also, my father was born in the early nineteen-twenties - and although he was still a boy when he saw "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," he also loved it as an adult. You have to remember, well-animated feature-length cartoons were pretty rare back then, and Disney took pains to make those early movies memorable. They left an impression we can't begin to imagine today.
So - Very Happy Birthday, OP, and many more!

I didn't mean to be cynical with my comment, I just wanted to see how old he would've been when the movie came out and I did it wrong, and thought the result was funny
