Re: Fandom and Anxiety

I think a lot of people online experience what is a completely normal level of anxiety over something potentially stressful and then self-diagnose themselves with an anxiety disorder as a result.

I know someone who doesn't want to get a job because she's never had a job before and she's ~scared~, completely ignoring the fact that everyone gets nervous about a new job, particularly their very first one. And of course her family coddles her and lets her sit at home doing nothing, so what incentive does she have to go get a job when people are happy to take care of her?

In fact, I think the real problem is parents or friends who enable that sort of thing. Was I scared when I got my first job? Hell yes, I don't know a single person who wasn't. But my parents wouldn't let me back out on it and guess what, everything was fine. When people enable it, it just becomes a self-perpetuating feedback loop and there's no reason for the person to want to try anything even the most remote bit difficult.

I get the feeling this is also part of the mental disorder culture you see on Tumblr and a lot of certain online spaces.

I absolutely believe things like anxiety disorders and such are real issues, and in many ways prevalent. But I also think they make a convenient exit route that leads to other people latching onto them as a cop-out.

There are lots of scary things in life in which the only answer is to continue to be terrified as all fuck and forge forward anyway. But starting young, American culture for sure and many others as well, tends to encourage a tendency to coddle people. A little coddling is fine and needed, but not when it means people overreact and have no idea what to do or how to handle themselves the moment they feel a bit of fear because they've never had to deal with it before.

Exactly. Being nervous over things is fine and healthy and a perfectly normal part of life. It's scary when you go out into the world on your own for the first time! But it's also something that everyone needs to do at some point, nervous or not. You can't just say "I'm scared, so I don't want to do it."

There are tons of things that induce anxiety in normal, mentally healthy people. Going to college. Getting your first job. Learning to drive. Moving out on your own. Everyone experiences the same worry over those things, and it's normal. You're not unusual for being frightened by them. It seems like these days a lot of people think that nothing should be hard or scary or even the slightest bit uncomfortable, which... isn't how life works.
