Probably what you heard/read was that a lot of people see F!S as "nicer" and more regulated than most other anon fandom spaces. Doesn't mean we're nice on our own. (Hell, I'm pretty sure half the people here will tell you I'm a flat out unmitigated bitch, possibly the biggest on here that isn't anon or an out-and-out troll).

I'm not sure if this means I should accept that I'm a nice person or work even harder to be a bitchy one.

I get to be both to people in real life and have fun confusing the hell out of them in the process. I need to find a way to make that translate online more often... :P

I try to be open so people know where I'm coming from with what I say, but sometimes I don't realize until a day or two later that just because I like to have that much background on people doesn't mean they want the same of me.

Haha, I am being what I am and I don't plan on changing that any time soon. But "what I am" in terms of what I say vs my actions come off very differently, that's all. ;)

(Though oddly enough I am both nicer and meaner online than I "really am" in real life).

You're not. I mean, you've showed your ass on here, sure - but so has every other named user [and probably most of the anons at one time or another. Lord knows I have.]

Actually, most of the named users seem pretty nice here - or, at least, not intentionally mean most of the time as long as you give the same consideration in return.

True - though if the OP wants to see why F!S gets called that then they should really go check out RP!Secrets. That place is bad enough it's actually driven off multiple mods, and shut down at least once, because of the negativity. : /
