Well ... without knowing how many posts/comment threads you read, or whether you read more than a single day's worth, I'm going to guess that you haven't read much.

I've read F!S almost every day for the past 2 or 3 years, and while yes, there are often snarly snarky responses, there are also commentors that have been compassionate, responsive, and supportive.

People are usually nice enough with secrets expressing sincere-sounding issues. Lots of hugs for OPs who are in crisis. It's just that the majority of secret makers sound like dickbags themselves.

You should have seen old F!S on lj when we were really allowed to let rip. This, despite what you think, is the nice fluffy-bunny and supportive F!S. Mainly because there is a "ban this person" poster around who shrieks whenever they see something they don't like and Case is far too trigger happy on the thread freeze function. It would be nice to be able to say that many secrets and posters, like you OP, deserve to be sodomized by a chipmunk weilding a chainsaw with the blood of your puppy on it. Just we can't. Still at least we are still a little mean and able to do a little for the cause of reminding people the internet and online comms are not safe places for the neurotically weak, that is something. If you want a hug, dress as a choirboy and visit a Catholic Church.

Pretty much. I don't even bother to read the majority of the comments on my posted secrets anymore. People will take issue with anything. I've posted secrets that meant a lot to me and were hard to admit. The people who responded back only wanted to pick a selfish fight with me, as though my personal thoughts were directed solely at them. Some of the people are awesome here, but many need to grow up and understand that not everything is about them.

idk, I see a lot of niceness and asshattery on f!s but if someone is going way off the asshat deep end people usually step in and tell them to cut it out. Snark is normal and expected, but kindness isn't rare, either. I think this community is fun with a nice mix of genuine supportiveness and entertaining snark.

I hate how many times when one posts a secrets people start dog piling on you. Yeah, I realize my opinion is bad, that's why it's a SECRET.

I don't send many secrets because it's just annoying to deal with this stupidity.

F!S shows its ass quite often. Especially when someone posts a secret about stuff like rape or suicide. I always know some asshole is going to drop in and troll the fuck out of it in a sad attempt to be 2edgy4theworld. It's really gross.

It's not that we're not nice, it's that we're all being more honest than we would in any other medium or venue.
For example, in real life an in other corners of the internet if someone's going on about how much they love Thing A, and I think Thing A is a shallow and pointless waste of ink, I'll just smile and nod. But here, I'll hop up and say "Thing A is dumb!"

There are definitely some trolls and asshats and permanently offended chuckleheads around here, but the normal people entirely outweigh them.

Probably what you heard/read was that a lot of people see F!S as "nicer" and more regulated than most other anon fandom spaces. Doesn't mean we're nice on our own. (Hell, I'm pretty sure half the people here will tell you I'm a flat out unmitigated bitch, possibly the biggest on here that isn't anon or an out-and-out troll).
