Thank you.

I see this with things like people with service dogs that everyone suspects they don't need too. People assume that they don't need it and go on a tirade about how that makes everyone suspicious of people who legitimately need them and they are completely lacking in self-awareness as they do exactly the thing that they're supposedly trying to prevent.

People do that? Is it because of seizure dogs, and other non-visible conditions for which a service dog can really help? gah such ignorance...

Yep, it happens. I knew someone who had a service dog to help her deal with PTSD and she was really enthusiastic about how great service dogs are (which was good; I used to work with them and it was awesome, though mine were for physical disabilities) but then she would get suspicious whenever she asked someone what their dog does for them and they wouldn't want to talk about it. It didn't seem to occur to her that not everyone is as open about these things as she is. And then she would get people agreeing with her when she told other people about these instances.

I only recently heard about service dogs for PTSD and I think that is such a cool thing. Watched a really feels-inducing short vid about it a few months ago.

I watched a similar thing recently. My girlfriend has seen pretty much every dog documentary on Youtube and she has me watch the best ones and one of them included a couple stories that made me cry in a good way.

My mother thinks my brother would do well with an assistance dog. He's got narcolepsy. If he's wide wake he does look like he's got a problem - he's pretty fit, certainly not blind.

THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS. I will admit sometimes I'm not in the mood to see mental health stuff all over tumblr (because I go to these places for fun escapism, not to talk about my issues.) But this bullshit of "oh, these FAKERS are really hurting you so much" is just NOT TRUE.

You know what actually hurts me? People belittling and demeaning my problems in the disguise of "oh but I'm really talking about fakers." I also don't like that this brings about an attitude of "oh, well let's just not talk about it" when that is a huge issue in regards to mental health. People need to be educated about it, they need to talk about it, and so many people don't seek treatment because they are afraid and that needs to stop.

I got into a tiff here on FS a while ago where someone started ing with the 'I'm only talking about the fakers' argument and then within the next few comments proceeded to essentially insist that anyone who actually talks about their mental issues must be faking it for attention.

So yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if there's some sort of correlation between those lines of thought.

Came here to say pretty much this.

I think the OP's point was that it's now harder to tell who is really suffering and who is just saying they are for the attention. In which case, they aren't the arbiter because they don't know who to believe in the first place.
