I don't get wanting to play games as yourself. I don't one bit. Even when I can play a female characters it's never "me."

Me neither. I also don't get why anyone would want to be part of the SP world, unless they enjoy spouting bullshit and being anally raped.

I usually feel connected to the character, but it doesn't matter if it's a completely customizable character or just... Mario. They all become "me" in a sense until I finish the game.

And when I can choose it's usually random who I do choose. Sometimes it shallow and I choose the cute one (in pokemon that means the girl) and sometimes it's based off of who I feel like flirting with, like in the Harvest Moon games.

I do want more female representation in games, and there are certain franchises where I really want them to let me play certain characters (like a game in the main Zelda franchise following Zelda, or when do I get to play as Kairi in Kingdom Hearts?) But I don't need a character to be "me" exactly, I just need to ability to play more kickass women.

Me neither. I don't want to be in the game world; I want to experience it through the eyes of the characters that exist in that world. I get to be me all the time in real life, so video games are a chance to put myself into another character's shoes.

I just like to have options. Different character designs, different abilities, etc.

Me neither. The whole point to me is being someone else.

Yeah, this.

Representation is important, no questions. And I think there should be options present for those who want to insert themselves in a game. But if I have an option in a game that has customization to play as, say, a non/near-human, I'm gonna go for the non/near-human option, no questions.

This. Like, I don't really get how in RPGs some players make the character their IRL copy and then call it roleplaying. Ehh... no. I'm a female and 2/3 of my roleplaying characters are male. Because I do NOT want to be me. I'm me 24/7. Playing as a male makes roleplaying more fun for me since it's easier to not project myself to the character.

Of course, I'm not saying this "me"-centered gaming isn't right. Everyone plays like they want and that's cool. I just personally don't get it and I don't get how many people make gender such a huge number. If you can identify playing as an alien, robot, lizard, whatever... then why is it so hard to play as opposite gender? I roll my eyes when someone says that s/he just can't identify with a male/female while playing a freaking Argonian or Khajiit. Right... So you can identify being a talking lizard but playing as the opposite gender is something totally alien?
