...Sorry, but I just find this so hard to believe. You're telling me that someone gave your family a bunch of money, and that they in turned gave it to you to invest as you saw fit (and even buy clothes for yourself)? And this was when you hadn't even turned eighteen yet?

Perhaps you're talking about your portion of your money, assuming your family split it up -- but even that I find it farfetched.

As someone who once offered to pay a family friend's way through college, it's not as farfetched as you'd think.

No, but the OP specifically says that the money was given to help the "family get back on their feet" -- not just to help pay for her/his education.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-24 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that too. I personally have only offered the education thing which was turned down, but the rest of my family has given more than six figures to multiple people like that. Each. Usually high school or college buddies of my father's, and things like that. It does happen.

It's not so hard to believe. Just take "third handbag this month!" from up-a-few-posts anon's story and make them generous and caring instead of selfish and oblivious. And OP managed the money really well, too. It doesn't always end up like a Judge Judy case.

If anyone gave my family money they would give it to me to spend as I saw fit, so not too far fetched.

...even before I turned 18, because I am and have always been the most responsible person bearing my last name.

Same.

As part of a family that has well-to-do connections, it's a bit surprising (and kinda weird) the kinds of things you can do if you know what to do and who to call. My mom and dad personally or jointly funded several of my relatives through college and the early years of work, among other things.

My son's partner was left well over $150,000 by his uncle at the age of 19 and invested it. It happens.

I've given a friend and her family a few thousand dollars to help support them when her dad lost his job and they then lost their house. It's not that farfetched at all.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-25 01:03 pm (UTC)(link)
can't you read? it's not about giving money away, that's not what was said at all. and i agree with the op of this thread: i don't believe it either.
