I recommend just recording one. Then listen to it. I am 98% certain you are going to sound waaaaay better than you think you will. And then, after hearing yourself, you can decide whether you want to clean it up some, or a lot, or forget it.

Same here. I like the idea of recording podfic, but the info I found on it made it sound like a shitton of extra work on top of the recording. But maybe you should just try it out. Record something and see how it sounds. Maybe you won't even need any editing.

Some podficcers are just more into the tech aspects than others but just recording with your laptop phone is not a problem at all and won't get you judged. People come with different backgrounds and skill levels. Some people also don't edit much at all. It's like how some writers are super into getting everything betaed and others just don't care and post.

Podfic fandom is super welcoming of newbies and tries to be friendly and accessible, don't be scared!

I've recorded fic on a basic Mac laptop mic. It sounded good enough to me, and I used to work at a radio station and edit music. TBH unless the quality is noticeably tinny or scratchy, I don't think people will mind. :)

How about. Start with reading some favorite drabbles or short stories and experiment a little how it sounds, if you think you should adjust something etc... as in start small and see if you like going further.

Also on the technical aspects, while I haven't ever recorded podfic, I did some recordings for university (basically doing synchro for vids) and just using a simple headset (like really simple, all it really needed was a covered mic) and audacity was enough to get a decent sound. (The same goes for recording simple songs).

It doesn't really take much to start recording some decent audio. Also, aleays remember, you're doing this to have fun. Nobody should hold it against you if you don't want to do more than the basics.

If you decide to go for it, I've built a home recording studio on zero budget and wrote a whole bunch of articles about how to do it. What I've built is far, far more than you need, but they're several short articles so you can pick and choose what you need. ^_^

Just do it! Some people, like me, just LOOOVE podfic, and don't care one bit if it's not a technical feat of perfection. I record it too, and I don't make a big fuss about editing--I just edit out my mistakes and post it. The other stuff, the techy and more complex aspects of it, are interesting in ways, but I don't pay much attention to them other than to read the posts and go, hmm, that sounds cool, or like something I might try some day.

The world needs more podficcers. I bet you'll do great! \o/

I wouldn't worry about it too much, honestly. I was kind of worried about it when I got started, too, so I just recorded a few short fics that I wrote to get a feel for it. I knew the fics well enough that I did barely any editing (mostly just cutting out mistakes, though even that's not strictly necessary; it just makes it seem more like someone's actually there reading the story). I enjoyed it a lot, and apparently at least some people listened to them. And, of course, if you're not satisfied with whatever you record, you can always just not post it anywhere.
