You know, I have seen some SJWs try to classify the Irish as POC because they don't want to admit that yes in fact white people CAN be oppressed.

Speaking as a mick fuck that.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-27 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Are they going to call Slavs POC too when they learn about their history in the Holocaust and how they were slaves of Muslims, Orthodox and Protestants since after the fall of the Roman Empire.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
WHAT. HOW.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
Because 130 years ago, they would have been. Study some fucking history.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
Regarded as an inferior and debased and racially different sort of white people, yes. Regarded as being any sort of colour comparable to non-Europeans? Absolutely not. I expect your mind can't admit the possibility that racism can involve one set of white people oppressing another set of white people which is where the idea of (mis)applying the very contemporary term and concept of POC to the historic oppression of Irish people comes into play. And before you ask, I've studied some fucking history. I have a degree in it from an Irish university.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
How much did your Irish university teach you about American racism? Because when Irish people first immigrated here, they weren't considered white. The same thing for Italians, Eastern Europeans, etc - for a long time 'white' meant Anglo-Saxon protestant, period.

Ugh, are they ever gonna stop using the term POC.
lotesse: (glamazon)

[personal profile] lotesse 2014-03-28 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
considering that the term was coined by a feminist of color your use of "they" comes off as really fucking ignorant

(Anonymous) 2014-03-29 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
What? No it wasn't. It's been used regularly since the seventies, and as early as the 1700s. MLK Jr referred to "citizens of color" in a few speeches. There's no clear origin of the term.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
They will as soon as they decide POC is now offensive and we move on to the next PC word/phrase.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
That makes me probably the whitest POC in the history of anything ever, then.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
It does now, but in the late 1800s in America, you would have been treated like shit for being Irish.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
DA. Yes, in the 1800s, they would have been treated like shit for being Irish, but the color of their skin wouldn't have changed. I thought that was the point of this subthread? That you can be oppressed and not POC?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
They were POC. They no longer are.

My fucking god, the ignorance of you people is grating. Race is a goddamned motherfucking construct. Racial boundaries change depending on time and place. Prior to the advent of the African slave trade, "black" did not possess negative racial connotations; much of the bullshit that is used to justify racism against blacks was developed as a justification for slavery, not the other way around.

Additionally, Irish people (as well as Germans, Italians, Spaniards, Polish folks, etc) were not considered to be white in the 1800s and early 1900s. They were all considered to be members of separate and unequal races. So, there actually is some logic to people saying that they are POC, and you idiots would know that if you actually studied any of this shit instead of just reacting to crap on the internet. The reason it's now wrong for people to say that the Irish are POC is because they no longer are, not because the concept itself is ridiculous.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, we (Irish people) were regarded as racially different from Anglo Saxons. No, we were not regarded as being a different colour. We were regarded as a different and inferior sort of white person. It's absurd to use the modern US term Person of Colour in this context

I'm not starting in on you, but are you American? Your slang suggests you are. I find a lot of Americans very hung up on skin colour as being the sole defining feature of racial discrimination and the only way you can rationalise white-on-white racial discrimination is to either go "that's not racism, it's xenophobic bigotry" or to do what you're doing and say "they were regarded as racially different and that automatically equals not-white". You do the same sort of thing when it comes to things like Asian-on-Asian racism - it's recast as classism or shadism or any other sort of -ism just as long as it's not racism because you can't conceive of racism as something that can happen between people who have roughly the same skin colour and without white people being involved.

I love you.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 06:38 am (UTC)(link)
I love this comment, thank you for saying this.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 10:05 am (UTC)(link)
Wish I could thumb up this comment. Thank you for putting that idiot in their place.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 02:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I love how they ignore that along with the Irish (and other Celtic people), women were also regarded as inferior to the "default" white Anglo-Saxon Protestant man. And still, women were not regarded as "POC".

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
It always fascinates me how insistent Americans are to implement their local terms, mannerisms and beliefs worldwide.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd love this comment too, but I'm not the same person as every single one of the other responders has been (lol IPs).

How was stroking your own ego by responding to yourself five times, anon?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure I only replied to this once and I'm not the same anon as all the others. "lol IPs" for real.
