Yeah, if it's not moeshit and doesn't have excessive fanservice or shippable teenage boys, it won't do well.

Miyazaki was right.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Even if it does have shippable boys, it doesn't always do well. Karneval didn't sell too well iirc. The only big shows/franchises that cater to female otaku that did exceptionally well are Free!, Kuroko's Basketball, Uta no Prince-sama, and Prince of Tennis. They're the exceptions

What is Madoka, Fate/Zero, Gundam, JoJo, Macross...

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair, Madoka was definitely aimed at the otaku crowd.

Overt boobs and booty fanservice isn't the only type of pandering.

seriously? I guess you could say that getting Aoki Ume for the designs could be considered pandering but what else about it could be considered pandering?

Cute, helpless girls made to suffer. Homura in the flashback. Extremely shy girl with a heart disease? Give me a break.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-29 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my fucking god, are you serious? You're reaching so hard right now.

Magical girl anime have a proven adult male demographic, though. And seeing as Madoka had a night time slot, I'm pretty sure the show wasn't aiming at little girls.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-29 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
It wasn't aimed at little girls, of course not. I was under the impression it was aimed at adults. You know, adults in general. Even if it's specifically aimed at adult males that's not the same as being aimed at otaku. Otaku are a very small subset of adults. There's absolutely nothing to suggest it was aimed at them specifically.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-29 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
Except, y'know otaku are what the late night anime is aimed towards. No one out the niche going to go out their way to watch a late night anime.

I honestly don't know how you can't see it. You probably haven't watched a lot of anime, especially ones with moe elements.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-29 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
You're basically saying that almost every show with young/cute girls has otaku pandering.

Also, the girls were not helpless, and their suffering wasn't fanservice because it was a fucking integral part of the plot. It wouldn't have worked without suffering. Like, it may have appealed to otaku as a peripheral demographic, in the same way that a lot of shounen shows appeal to fujoshi, but I don't see how you can say it was catered towards them in any way.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-29 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yeahhh, you probably haven't watched a lot of anime. That, or don't know much about otaku.
Also, noitaminA isn't a late night block.

What was so fanservicey about Madoka to you? I can't stand how much yuri fanservice is shoehorned in every spin-off and the movies, but the original anime didn't have any obnoxious fanservice in my opinion.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-29 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
I don't remember there being any fanservice at all in Madoka.

There's that bit in the opening where she hugs another version of herself and they are naked? Like... I guess? I mean, it was clearly part of the effort to trick viewers into thinking they were watching a different kind of show, so.

That one, and also a 2 sec. pic where she's wearing a baby-doll or whatever you call that tiny outfit. I can't google it right now because I'm in class, but it's there in the opening.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-29 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
There's no fanservice in Madoka, unless you use the term so loosely that it would apply to literally every single anime ever created.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)

Madoka is a good anime, but if you think it isn't pandering to moepigs, I've got news for you.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-29 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
The characters didn't act like they had brain damage like the Kyoani girls do. Their designs were moe, but not the characters.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-29 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Moe pandering doesn't consist only on brain damage, you know.

Are you saying Gundam doesn't have shippable teenage boys? /smartass Anyway, the Gundam franchise has been around and successful for decades, way before anime industry becamethe way it is.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-29 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Not 00, AGE, or Build Fighters.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-29 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Reiji and Sei are both thirteen. They're teenagers but only barely. GBF also has Tatsuya Yuki who is seventeen. Setsuna and Allelujah are both teenagers in the first season though the later is almost twenty so not sure if he counts. Dunno about Age. Haven't seen it. Anyway, don't mind me. I'm being pedantic.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-29 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
sa

Apparently both Nils and Mao from GBF are also thirteen. They both seemed a bit younger so I completely forgot.
