Wow. I'm sensing a little bitterness coming down here from the Great White North. Calm yourself, no one's expecting you to be as awesome as the US.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-30 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously. Not everyone can have this much freedom. Hell, a bald eagle just flew through my window and dropped a tiny American flag on my lap. We can't expect other countries to live up to that.

not OP

(Anonymous) 2014-03-30 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Also north of the 49th parallel here...I find it particularly hilarious when I use Commonwealth spelling, refer to clearly Canadian concepts, and still get taken for American. Maybe OP is demonstrating typical Canadian patience? Long fuse that takes awhile to light (because it's so cold LOL) but once you set them off, best head for the hills...?

Or I could be way off-base, it's just a troll secret....

(Anonymous) 2014-03-30 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm expecting them to be more awesome than the U.S., and then I feel let down when they aren't. :pout:

(Anonymous) 2014-03-31 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry! We'll try to do better!

(Anonymous) 2014-03-31 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
This is my favourite comment in this entire post, it's just so Canadian. :) (At least what TV and the internet taught me Canada is like but I'm sticking to it!)

OMG, I was at a panel at my local con this weekend, and Canada got brought up. A Canadian in the audience yelled out "I love you!" or similar, and the panel guest was like "That's not very Canadian", and another Canadian shouted out "Sorry!"

Hey, we have our maple syrup, poutine, and hockey ok. You know how really important all that stuff is

(Anonymous) 2014-03-30 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Vermont and New Hampshire's maple syrup > Canadian maple syrup. Sorry, your maple trees weren't WATERED WITH THE BLOOD OF PATRIOTS.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-31 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
(Just ask them which of the two is better and make off with the title while they're squabbling about it.)

Represent.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-31 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
HEY I make my own maple syrup down here in the US of A because I have maples in my yard and I tap them because I am awesome and know things SO YOU SHUT UP ABOUT THIS "WE HAVE OUR MAPLE SYRUP" THING. I have my maple syrup too, yo! And it's well and truly mine because I literally made it myself!

Also I live in a state with a banging hockey team! HA!

(You got me on the poutine, though. So go you on that front)

You Americans will never have the power of poutine!
(You know what's hilarious? Most Canadians buy Aunt Jemima brand maple syrup.. pretty sure that's an American brand)

(Anonymous) 2014-03-31 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
Aunt Jemima? Oh god, no! No! Why must that be? I am so sad for your countrymen. :(

In all seriousness, though, I live in a place that's really weird about maple syrup. Like, I recently went out to breakfast with some people and they wouldn't use the table syrup because they couldn't be sure that it was "real." And there's a sugar shack nearby where you can volunteer and your payment for volunteering is a share of the batch.

It's as if it's a tenet of a goddamned religion, which explains how and why I know how to make it.

Poutine is awesome. I've only ever had vegetarian versions but yeah, it's delicious.

*applauds*

*still applauding*

Is this about using "American" as a demonym for the United States? Yes, we are aware that "America" encompasses two continents. But until "United Statesian" becomes an accepted term, we're going to use "American" to talk about the U.S.

I think "Statesian" or "Statesman/Stateswoman" should be a term.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-31 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
But there are other countries that have "states" in the name, so that wouldn't quite work.

"United Statesian" wouldn't work, either, because Mexico is technically the United States of Mexico (this, incidentally, is why I always get annoyed with people who are like "we should be United Statesians").

I honestly think "American" works just fine, since no other country has "America" in its name.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-31 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
but do you at least understand why someone would want to find an alternative, and not treat the idea as some bizarre and deeply offensive presumption or something

(Anonymous) 2014-03-31 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's about people who use "North American" as though it's synonymous with "U.S. American".
