Re: Most ridiculous "trigger warnings"?

I don't need a trigger warning. I do want a warning. It won't traumatize me, but it will make me sad, and guess what? I don't like being sad. I can get that from real life.

What things do you read where nothing sad ever happens? I'm all for feelgood fics myself, but I have to admit it sounds a little flat to have a plot where everything is fine and there's no conflict whatsoever.

So you prefer stories with no danger-related suspense?

Do you avoid genre fiction, then? Only read porny fanfics? Not making fun, legit question. I'm not sure how you consume media while avoiding all character death unless it's all romances and sitcoms. Even soaps kill off characters.

Not OP, but I like to be told about character death in fanfiction. I don't usually care about other media, but when I read fic I'm usually just in the mood to read fluffy or happy stuff, so I like to know to avoid anything else. But I definitely don't think it warrants a trigger warning. And I wouldn't hate on anyone who didn't warn for character death. They might not want to give spoilers for the plot.

Not OP either, but I agree with this. I'm not going to throw a fit if someone doesn't warn for character death, but I sure as heck appreciate it, because I hate reading fic with it. Doesn't bother me overly much in canon work, but if I'm reading fic, I'm usually not in the mood.

Yeah, fanfic different from general media for me. I'm not interested in death in fic.

Same here. I'm down with drama, difficulties, danger, all that but at the end of the road, I want the characters to survive to play another day. I've read good deathfic but I'm not interested in a general sense.

agree. not a trigger, woudn't resent anyone for not warning, but in fanfic, something I definitely appreciate knowing about in advance. Other media is what it is, but I go to fanfic for a lot of reasons, and sometimes it's because I want to cheer myself up with happy fluff or sexy fun. It's nice to be able to scroll past obvious downers when I'm in that frame of mind.

ayrt

I read the beginning to see if I'm interested, then I read the end to see how it turns out, then if I'm satisfied with the ending I read the middle.

Movies I have to look up a point-by-point synopsis or I get anxious and have to leave the room.

Stories are perfectly capable of incorporating effective danger-related suspense without killing off characters. The vast majority of prime-time TV dramas will not kill off a member of the main cast in the middle of a season, but the characters on many of those shows are in life-threatening danger every episode. It's suspenseful and exciting because the viewer experiences the characters' fear and uncertainty, even if they know that the writers would never kill off these characters mid-season. It's suspension of disbelief.

Besides, as the other anon mentioned, people often read fanfic to satisfy different needs than they use canon for -- and not just smut, either. Plenty of action-oriented casefic or other gen doesn't involve character death. When it does, I don't think it's unreasonable to use content labels (not trigger warnings), so people can make more informed decisions and find the kind of fic they will enjoy reading.
