Re: Most ridiculous "trigger warnings"?
(Anonymous) 2014-03-30 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)(And yes, I've read fanfic/books which had characters I was emotionally invested in die. It was upsetting, but deep down, I KNOW IT'S NOT REAL. That's why I don't need a "warning" that bad things happen in literature.)

Do you avoid genre fiction, then? Only read porny fanfics? Not making fun, legit question. I'm not sure how you consume media while avoiding all character death unless it's all romances and sitcoms. Even soaps kill off characters.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-31 12:12 am (UTC)(link)I read the beginning to see if I'm interested, then I read the end to see how it turns out, then if I'm satisfied with the ending I read the middle.
Movies I have to look up a point-by-point synopsis or I get anxious and have to leave the room.
Re: Most ridiculous "trigger warnings"?
Besides, as the other anon mentioned, people often read fanfic to satisfy different needs than they use canon for -- and not just smut, either. Plenty of action-oriented casefic or other gen doesn't involve character death. When it does, I don't think it's unreasonable to use content labels (not trigger warnings), so people can make more informed decisions and find the kind of fic they will enjoy reading.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-31 12:49 am (UTC)(link)People read fanfiction to get specific emotional fixes. Fanfic can be so very specifically tailored for your exact needs, there are so many ways in which you can find a story that presses the exact emotional buttons you want pressed at that moment. And that's part of what people like about fanfiction. Published books are a different matter, and people come to them with different expectations.
So yeah, sometimes I just don't want to read a fic where my favorite character dies right at that moment.
But then, there are the convenient "choose not to use archive warnings" tags in Ao3, so you can get around it if you really want to.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-31 01:56 am (UTC)(link)Like having to tag a "character death".. when there are several close calls, but only one real death, at the very end of a 500K fic, and of a character that is greatly hated in said fandom.
So, then the author is yelled at for "misleading the audience".
Ah, fandom. Never change.
