Most ridiculous "trigger warnings"?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-30 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, the ones that defeat the purpose of actual trigger warnings about things like rape or abuse.

Re: Most ridiculous "trigger warnings"?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-30 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Gay content - that one was pretty offensive.

I've seen trigger warnings get mixed with labels, so things like crossdressing, fluff and happy endings get trigger warnings.

I think "sad ending" is a pretty dumb trigger warning, too. But maybe that's just me.

My favorite one was one someone

1. insulted someone with the word "bitch"
2. tagged their own goddamn post with "sexist slurs"

if that term is so "problematic" so as to need a trigger warning, why are you using it in the first place?

"Scopophobia" (fear of being looked at), tagged on any picture that involves a character vaguely facing toward the camera. =_=

I'm really, really unfond of seeing "tw: casual ableism" tagged on things, going "wait, what??", rereading the entire post confused, and then finally realizing someone used the word "dumb" at some point.

Trigger warning: butt.

I swear that was the entirety of the warning. Turned out it was referring to consensual anal sex--I have no clue why they thought that needed anything more than the usual mature content warning.

I don't believe that there's such a thing as a ridiculous trigger warning; anything can potentially become a trigger for someone if it's associated with enough trauma.

That being said, it is ridiculous/unrealistic for someone with uncommon triggers to expect them to be warned for outside of very specific contexts.

Re: Most ridiculous "trigger warnings"?

For written work, basically anything other than the major ones like rape and child abuse.

For images I have more patience and understanding because viewing it happens so instantaneously and there is no backing up out of it. At that point I think things like blood, gore, etc. are totally reasonable.

Other than stuff like that, though, I think "trigger" warnings have gotten so ridiculous across the board that MOST of them defeat the purpose, harm most of the people they're supposedly to "protect" by coddling them out of any ability to function in the real world, and all too often wind up serving as weaponized social justice excuses to "call out" anyone not wringing their hands sufficiently over the victimization complex so much of fandom has going on.

Recently "gendered slurs" has been my, er, rage-prompting favorite. If you get genuine psychological trauma from the mere sight of the word bitch, holy god but do you need to get the fuck off the internet and seek help.

Unless this was just a bad dream, I think I remember somebody tagging 'tw smiling'. It was on a post about hating people who are cheerful or something like that. Actually, I hope that really was just a bad dream because that's really really stupid.

Someone whined about a lack of TWs for post-apocalypse.

Also "TW for eliminationism" -- only ever saw that once though.

TW mention of rape

I am still not sure how if you get triggered by the mentioning of rape you won't be triggered by the trigger warning

I don't think this one is ridiculous, but perhaps a tad overboard: I saw a TW for emetophobia because the poster said something along the lines of "God, I'm feeling sick after eating, I hope I don't puke" and as I am emetophobic myself I still didn't get it. I mean, I go D: if I see someone puke or hear the sounds of puking but just looking at the word... no. At which point it made me wonder why the poster wrote about their nausea in the first place if they have super emetophobic followers.

As for ridiculous... I saw someone who TWed "bubblegum", although I don't know if they were being serious.

Re: Most ridiculous "trigger warnings"?

Character death. I know people get caught up in stories and identify with characters, but... seriously? You want a semi-spoiler because you're going to go beserk if someone who doesn't really exist dies? I think if it's truly going to traumatize you, then you need to take a break until the line between fantasy and reality is a little less blurry for you.

(And yes, I've read fanfic/books which had characters I was emotionally invested in die. It was upsetting, but deep down, I KNOW IT'S NOT REAL. That's why I don't need a "warning" that bad things happen in literature.)

I TW for common things like rape, abuse but I tend to go on the mood of my day for things like insects and once someone asked me to TW for babies and I just no. No, sorry. I'll tag for babies but I'm not TW for them.

Sure clowns are fucking freaky, but clowns themselves do not cause trauma. I mean, they CAN cause trauma, but they don't inherently cause trauma
