I know a subsequent secret is all about how judging other people in fandom for what they like is badTM, but I seriously judge fans of the Harry/Draco ship very harshly. The fic is by and large horribly written and vastly OC for both characters.

And yet it seems to currently be the most popular HP ship. Did all of you read a different set of books than I did?

No, we read the same books. We just like the enemies to friends to lovers trope and H/D is great pairing for that.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-31 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. I like the thought of how it would progress from enemies and how they would develop to get to the in love point.

*We just like the enimies to friends to lovers trope and we're too lazy to write original fiction so we butcher the characters of Harry and Draco.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-31 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
My point exactly. Thank you.

So what? People writing out of character fanfiction doesn't have an impact on the books or the movies. You don't have to read it if you don't want to. I'm not a Harry Potter fan or a fan of this ship but I think complaints like this are ridiculous. Who cares if a bunch of people like ooc fanfiction? Does it hurt you, personally? Does it affect the closed canon? Nope? Why insult them then?

This is so funny considering how many of us are actually published writers and professional editors.
It is so obvious you're not in our fandom; and not just because you're trying to insult us in a form that is dedicated to doing that very thing to all works despite the medium.

Yes, this, but also H/D has been a popular pairing for ~15 years now. That's pre-GoF, and Harry's and Draco's canonical characterizations, the books' tone, and what we'd seen of the setting and worldbuilding in general were all quite different then. I think a lot of the people criticizing H/D as OOC are expecting the fanfic characterizations to reflect where the HP series ended, even though a lot of H/D fic was written long before the final volumes came out.

And even more recently written fics tend to draw upon those earlier H/D works as well as upon canon and/or to reject later bits of canon that they disagree with--EWE is fairly ubiquitous, but some writers take it further than that--so the characterizations are rather different than they would be if someone tackled the pairing without reference to any of that fannish history. Personally, as a person who first started shipping H/D in 1999 and who didn't really care for books 6 and 7, this suits me just fine.

lol that shit was OOC back then too. nothing wrong with shipping OOC bullshit, but trying to rationalize that H/D used to be in character is ridiculous.

SA

A handful of examples of what I'm talking about, for the benefit of anyone who's curious and wasn't in HP fandom over a decade ago:

Calico & julad - "Lustre" http://archiveofourown.org/works/237684

FayJay - "Invisible to See" http://archiveofourown.org/works/4724

mad_martha - "The Lodger" http://archiveofourown.org/works/218544

Resonant - "Transfigurations" http://archiveofourown.org/works/59676

SilviaKundera - "Butter and Pigtails" http://archiveofourown.org/works/128728

The characterizations don't entirely mesh with the end-of-series characterizations, but I think if you read these fics and consciously put yourself in the mindframe of a pre-OotP reader, you'll be able to see how the authors got where they did from there.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-31 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
lol Transfigurations was the fic that pushed me into H/D is fucking bullshit camp 11 or so years ago when I attempted to read that garbage.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-31 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
And the characterizations in those fics didn't really ~mesh~ with Harry and Draco's pre-OotP characters either, so...
