Do you pirate?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-01 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
And if so how often?

If you don't, what's your reason?

And how often if support the stuff that you like?

Re: Do you pirate?

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2014-04-01 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Not often, and really only for things I can't afford or think are going to be so bad that I don't want the creators to get my money.

Textbooks are one of the big things. Bad sequels of movie series or shitty horror films are another.

I also very rarely pirate TV shows, because I almost never watch television so paying for cable would be a stupid waste of money. I almost never pirate novels, video games (unless I have bought them previously), movies that I feel should receive my money, and other forms of entertainment.

Re: Do you pirate?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-01 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't. My reasoning is that these things cost money to make and that money is made largely by charging for the thing. And if other people have to pay for an experience, it's not fair for me not to just because I don't have money right now.

Maybe that puts me far behind or maybe I have to sacrifice something else or work more hours than I want so I can afford to not be so far behind, but that just seems like the right thing to do, to me.

* I imagine if there were some things that are entirely unavailable in my country and will stay that way for a long time (like, years not weeks or months) I might compartmentalize my ethics and make an exception, but that's not something that's come up for me yet.

I you asked me this a few years ago, my answer would be "I live in a country where we have pirate!DVD factories inside electrical transformers. It's friggin' impossible not to pirate stuff since no one really knows where do the CD's really come from!"

Now, it's gotten better, but my country still doesn't have the variety of stuff that's available in the west, so now I pirate animes occasionally in my free time.

Re: Do you pirate?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-01 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope. Mainly because I'd feel stupidly guilty about it. I don't judge others terribly or hold them to my own guilt standards, but it's just not something I could do and be happy about. But I also don't support the things I love financially since I'm dirt poor. Hopefully someday in the future I can have that privilege.

Re: Do you pirate?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-02 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Everyday. I rarely pay to see movies and I don't have cable because I just get the tv shows I want offline. I pretty much only pay for stuff by indie, low-budget artists.

Re: Do you pirate?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-02 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yup. I'm a broke college student with no tv. Pirating is the only way I ever watch anything. I do buy music, though.

Not a lot. Sometimes I'll watch an anime online or something. I don't pirate games (unless you count roms for old games that the company isn't making money off anymore anyway). Never really felt the need to. For anime, I'm such a casual watcher for the most part that it's hard to justify spending the money, though I'd like to eventually own the series that I love the most.

I pirate shows and movies a lot. I only let myself watch it once to see if I like it. If I do like it and want to watch it again then I have to find a legal way to do so.

Maybe once a month? And generally only things I own but need an HD version of for GIFs (or because I only have it on blu-ray).

Re: Do you pirate?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-02 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly? Mostly? I do whichever is easier. Usually, that's buying something legally.

I have a few times in the past with albums and books, due to being broke and not knowing if I'd end up liking whatever it was. For the most part I try to buy everything.

Re: Do you pirate?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-02 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
The occasional movie, or if it's something I can't get my hands on legitimately. Pretty much never with new video games, especially if they're from teams I really like. So I guess in my case, I do my best to support what I can, but I feel more strongly about supporting video games than I do movies or tv shows.

(Music I almost entirely use Spotify for now, so I guess my subscription fee counts as support? Though I know a lot of artists find the whole thing skeevy. So that's sort of a grey area, I guess.)

Re: Do you pirate?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-02 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
I use pirating like a trial period for movies that I only plan to watch once and games I only intend to play only once - or stuff that's years and years old and not readily available in stores or anything.

If it's indie stuff, I pay for it. If I try it, like it enough to keep it around, and plan to watch or play more than once, I make sure to go back and buy a legit copy. I also rec it around so other people see it and buy copies for friends, too.

Re: Do you pirate?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-02 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Only when there isn't a legal way to acquire it. I don't mind having to wait a while for it to be available here.

I'm considering to pirate the new seasons of a couple of tv shows right now despite them being available in the cable I pay for but, who the hell think it's a good idea to air one of them only at 1 AM during the week and refuse to air re-runs during the weekend?
The other one is not being aired in the same channel the previous season was aired, but in another channel I stopped paying for, since their subs are always out of sync and in a few movies the sound was out of sync too. I refuse to pay for such channel again.

I live in Norway and are caught up on American Shows which should answer your question... Other than that usually I don't if I can buy it legally...

I do own two shelves full of television shows, pay for two different streaming services and about 200DVDs, so I don't feel that guilty about it... Also 80% of my shows don't air here, so I tend to order the DVDs whenever I can/have the money.

Manga usually, since I refuse to track down volume after volume of a long-running series. Everything else only if I can't easily get it legally. (And I never pirate video games if they're in a language I can speak--if I want to "try them out," I just watch Let's Plays.)

I don't have any moral objection to piracy--I'm a Utilitarian, so my relationship to property rights is loose enough without adding copying to the mix. I just don't see the point in stealing paid content when there's so much readily available content that was made free by its creators.

Re: Do you pirate?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-02 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
yup. pretty much everything lol. but music the most, just because i am ALWAYS wanting to find something new, and if i tried to buy everything i listened to well. couldn't be done. i used to d/l movies/tv but now i always stream them. try to find legit places but if i can't then oh well. yes, i am indeed a terrible person.

Re: Do you pirate?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-02 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I watch different (both less than legal and legal) streams often, but I rarely download and save anything. When it comes to supporting stuff, I buy books quite a lot, but it's been at least a year since I last bought a DVD. There's been nothing that I'd like to watch again that badly, and almost everything will eventually end up on TV as a repeat.

Re: Do you pirate?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-02 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I stream TV shows sometimes, mostly older things that aren't on Netflix. That's about it.

My reason is mostly that they're not on Netflix.

Re: Do you pirate?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-02 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
I do. Fairly often too.

It's mostly TV shows and movies that are not available where I live, but I also pirate some things that I own on DVDs and such for fanvids (or just easy availability. The periods I'm into comics I pirate them too as it's extremely expensive where I live and I would be a lot behind my friends who read the same comics if I had to wait for them to be imported. If I can I also pirate textbooks as they are so fucking expensive and I'm a poor student.

I don't feel too bad about it though, and I buy what I can afford and watch what I can on Netflix and listen to music mostly on Spotify (and always link my fanmixes to the corresponding Spotify playlist so the artists can a teeny-tiny little something back from my fan activities if people choose to listen to them).

A handful of TV series, mostly ones that a non-American friend and I like to watch together via the internet. I make it a point to buy the DVDs when they come out.

Re: Do you pirate?

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2014-04-02 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Yes.

Why?

Quite easy: I watch mostly American/English series and my country tends to import them with terrible delays, in the worst case it can be a year later or more.

I hate spoilers and don't want to have to shun fandom because I'm a year behind.

Also we don't have anything like Netflix here - which I'd actually consider paying for, but it's not an option.

We do have like overpriced digital TV bundles, which I refuse to get, because there's like 4 channels I watch regularly on TV, and I'm not paying for like 30 more just to get a fifth I want.

If I do like the series, I will buy the DVD boxes once they're out here.

Never actually. When I was poor, I abused the local library. Now I generally wait for sales or rentals.
