Re: major character deaths

1) Ianto and Steven in Torchwood: Children of Earth. Their deaths didn't seem to serve any narrative purpose other than to demonstrate how GRIMDARK the show is and how much Jack is suffering. Steven's death had slightly more narrative purpose than Ianto's, I'll give it that much, but I maintain that making the sacrificial victim specifically Jack's grandson was aimed at tearing Jack down. It's like the numerous, numerous ways Jack has died on the show. By that point, it was more for shock effect - a lazy cop-out - than good storytelling.

2) Naruto. Oh god, stop killing people just to bring them back, seriously. At this point I don't even care when a character I like dies, because I suspect they'll be back before long. (And if they aren't, I can very easily imagine canonical ways they could be brought back, so it still doesn't seem permanent to me.)
Also, Hawaii Five-0. I stopped watching a while back, but I really didn't like the way they brought back Steve's mother. Also, can I say Wo Fat? He doesn't die, but the way he keeps escaping just seems cheap at this point. Even if he died, I wouldn't trust he really did die!

3) Character I hate coming back to life. I only hate characters I love dying if it serves no narrative purpose *coughIantocough*

4) ... Uchiha Sasuke. But it's never going to happen. Also, Jim Moriarty.

People always focus on Ianto's death, forgetting that everyone else has died to. What I really loved about that was that the show started with Gwen and Jack and the show ended with Gwen and Jack. And at that point I felt like they had to go all or nothing. They had already killed off the rest of the team I think it would have felt cheap or just not fit if they let Ianto live and everyone else died.

Well, first of all I disagree that the show's about Gwen and Jack - but I can see why you might say that, so I won't argue it. I do think you missed my point though. I don't mind Ianto's dying if his death serves a purpose other than "make Jack upset." Owen's and Tosh's deaths were different in that they essentially sacrificed themselves to save everyone. Ianto... not so much. The only thing his death revealed was how far the 456 were willing to go - which we already knew! If it had revealed something new about the 456 that Jack was later able to capitalise on to defeat the 456, that would have made more narrative sense. One small change - still a dead Ianto, but a better story.

Not to mention that it was just stupid as all hell for the guy to go in there. Jack can't die so the villain could throw what they wanted at him but he brings in his totally mortal boyfriend to say Fuck You to this supposedly ultimate killing alien race? What the hell logic is that?

Tell me about it! They should have given Rhys's job to Ianto, seriously. The thing I can't get over, though, is that they walked in without a plan. If they'd had an actual plan they really thought was gonna work, then Ianto going in with Jack could have made sense (because they weren't expecting the 456 to make an example of everyone in the building, after all). And hey, could have been a great moment there when they realise the plan's not gonna work, they're screwed, and that way Ianto's death is both poignant and makes sense! (Bonus points for what I suggested - that his death (or something he discovers before dying) paves the way for Jack to figure out how to kill the 456.) So much potential! So very wasted! I think that's what pisses me off most about his death, agh.
