They are pretty good, though, and their treatment of women is pretty good imo, but I'd still be slightly more cautious, because there are issues.
also, Diana Wynn Jones is pretty good, at least, I think so of what I've read. And OP, if you like manga/anime, I think Kimi ni Todoke is pretty good too? It's a shoujo manga, so romance, but it also deals with girl-girl friendships and gives them as much weight an importance as the romance angle (IMO, and up to book 12, I think? I don't think I've read far beyond that).

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)But I suppose most of my favorites of hers do involve some romance - Hexwood, Fire and Hemlock, Deep Secret... but if you're not turned off by that aspect, the women in those books are amazing.
