I would have rec'd all of them, but there are some pretty problematic elements in the Magical Wild West books wrt Native Americans, and while I still like the books, I don't want to rec them without first making mention of that fact, just in case that's a huge turn-off for the OP.

They are pretty good, though, and their treatment of women is pretty good imo, but I'd still be slightly more cautious, because there are issues.

also, Diana Wynn Jones is pretty good, at least, I think so of what I've read. And OP, if you like manga/anime, I think Kimi ni Todoke is pretty good too? It's a shoujo manga, so romance, but it also deals with girl-girl friendships and gives them as much weight an importance as the romance angle (IMO, and up to book 12, I think? I don't think I've read far beyond that).

mte. Although the romance might be a turn-off.

Yeah, if the OP doesn't like romance, that could be a problem, though I personally felt like the romances were handled well in what DWJ books I've read.

She does seem to have some element of romance in most of her books, but it's less front-and-center in some... most of the Chrestomanci books don't have a ton of romance, and I'd especially recommend Witch Week for those seeking great female characters. A Tale of Time City and Dogsbody didn't particularly either - well, aside from a couple relationships that are open to interpretation, I guess.

But I suppose most of my favorites of hers do involve some romance - Hexwood, Fire and Hemlock, Deep Secret... but if you're not turned off by that aspect, the women in those books are amazing.
