Anyone want to explain what twitter shade culture is?

Was about to ask this - seconding. What is Twitter shade?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-07 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm assuming they just mean "throwing shade on Twitter"

for more information on shade, I recommend this exciting and informative documentary

It's saying something insulting about someone without making it obvious it's about the person in question.

Never heard it called "Twitter Shade", though, just shade.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-08 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Isn't that just called passive-aggressive?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-08 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
"shade" is a little different because it's an insult worded in such a way that it seems like it could be a compliment/neutral

it's less about making the subject of insult vague, and more about making the insult itself vague

I came to this thread hoping to find answers and am still dreadfully confused.

Twitter shade... on tumblr? I'm a bit confused. Can someone explain this to me?
kaijinscendre: (Default)

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2014-04-07 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
No clue. People on Tumblr don't really bother with Twitter. Facebook and Reddit are their enemy.

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2014-04-07 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
See, that's what I've thought. I've heard of shade but I don't know what Twitter shade is. Like, are people on tumblr throwing shade on twitter users they follow? Or throwing shade on twitter for tumblr users they follow? Something else entirely?

I am going bananas trying to figure it out. Kinda. Well, I'm sitting here mildly curious, which is rare. So... BANANAS I TELL YOU!

If I were to hazard a guess, based on things I've read in like, wank reports and stuff, I'd guess that it's referring to using twitter to complain about people on tumblr, whether obliquely or specifically.

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2014-04-07 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
But then... how do people know they're the same person?

I think the OP is making a comparison in that people on tumblr will just unfollow/block you if they don't like you whereas on twitter they'll post insulting tweets about you? That's how I understood it, but I could be wrong.
forgottenjester: (Default)

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2014-04-07 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm, comparison between? But, like, Tumblr totally doesn't do that. They tend to be very forward about wanting you to change your posting habits.

I thought of a girl I know who is really superficially nice to people on tumblr and then says horrible stuff about them on twitter. Idk how she knows that those people aren't following her twitter too but whatever it's her bullshit.

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2014-04-08 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
That's... so weird. And... mean.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-08 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
I feel as though I know exactly who you're talking about. I would name and shame her, but she recently had a death in the family, and I'm not as cold hearted as she is.

Welp. All I can really say is that it's really weird to me to see "shade" used outside of the drag/club kid world.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-08 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
Oooh, try to convince Tumblr that using the word shade is cultural appropriation!

(Anonymous) 2014-04-08 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
I was just about to say- haha.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-09 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
it's not cultural appropriation, but if tumblr is going to use it, they could at least learn to use it right

(Anonymous) 2014-04-08 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
I personally only follow a couple of people on Twitter who I also follow on Tumblr. So I don't see this as being some huge phenomenon. But I can definitely see it happening, especially with how catty a lot of BNF's are.
