Medical question

[personal profile] philstar22 2014-04-07 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Is there any point to going to the doctor for a flu? I generally wouldn't go to the doctor for a virus. But its been 5 days and its still in my lungs and I still have a fever. I've had to take a nebulizer treatment several times and I can't really stop coughing long enough to sleep. And none of the cold meds I'm taking seem to actually be doing anything.

Is there anything the doctor could actually do, or do I just need to keep waiting it out?

Flu can take a while to clear out, especially if you have a shitty immune system. Average is about 1-2 weeks.

If you're not feeling at least a little better in a week you should probably see a doctor.

A doctor could eliminate the possibility it being something worse and maybe prescribe something stronger to fight your symptoms. After five days of feeling that shitty I'd definitely see a doctor. And if turns out to be something bacterial you'll want antibiotics.

I went to the doctor once when I had a cough too bad to sleep and asked for Tussionex which has hydrocodone and basically saved me. So there's not much they can do to actually make you better in those cases but you may be able to get more comfortable.

What everyone else said. Docs can eliminate the possibility of it being something worse, and f you still feel the same shitty symptoms after 5 days and it's not getting better at all, maybe something's wrong than just a common flu.

In my expierence the doctor would listen to your lungs, tell you that you have some bronchitis or other, give you prescription for nebuliser, a siryp and, in your case, some anti-cough tablets probably. Basicaly a doctor would know what works the best in you case in what combination. For example there're a dry and wet types of coughts. A doctor would ask what's the color of your mucus... So, depends on how expensive it is. Also don't listen to everything your doctor says and ask a lot of questions.

If you have a high temperature that you can't lower (around 38.5) and still have night sweats on 5th day, then you should call a doctor. I would.

Also don't stimulate your tracheas before sleep.) Get better soon!

There generally isn't much point in going to a doctor.... if you are certain it's the flu.

A lot of things start out with flu like symptoms and are things you should absolutely see a physician about, like whooping cough, pneumonia, the recent measles outbreaks...

If it lasts for a week or more it's generally a good idea to see a physician, but make sure you wear a surgical mask when you go out, to protect yourself and others.

Well, if it's really bad, a doc can prescribe you medicine to comfort you while you wait out the virus, especially if you're uncomfortable enough that you can't sleep. And if you've developed a bacterial infection in your lungs because of all the gunk in them, they can give you antibiotics for that.

Well, if you still have a fever, I'd definitely go. If anything, they can give you stuff to help with the symptoms.

Even if you're sure it started out as the flu, if it sticks around for much longer, go to the doc. The flu can trash your immune system (especially if it wasn't in the best shape to start with) and leave you vulnerable to all sorts of contagious nastiness like bronchitis.

Even if the doc sends you away with "it's the flu, go back to bed" you could get higher-strength meds and that might be worth the trip.

Taking cold meds for the flu... Real smart! Why not invest in the stock market or give it to a hobo?

What? Cold meds treat the same symptoms in anything. Cough meds, decongestin, and antihistamines work just as well for a flu as a cold.

Even if it's the flu, your doctor could prescribe something stronger to treat the symptoms. When I had that sort of cough, my PCP prescribed Phenergan syrup with codeine, which finally allowed me to sleep.

Rule of thumb is over 7 days, see the doctor; not for the virus, because that will be long gone; what it does is weaken your immune system so a bacterial invader can take hold. Which does need antibiotics.
