Book club

I am connected! Yay!

Ok the bookclub idea: We can discuss it and plan it out to the fifth end of a fart, but I think we just have to bite the bullet and just go for it, eh? So yeah, first try, please forgive me if I make an balls up out of this.

So. Make your recommendations here, let's have it! What do you all want to read? Make some reccomendations for books, today I'll try and figure out how to turn the... 10 most popular seeming into a poll for tomorrow.

Guidlines for Recommendations:

Genre: Any.

Size: I'm thinking nothing too Hefty for out first outing, eh? Not saying "NO" to anything, I just think make it as easy as possible for the first go. We'll do a "war and peace" next month if you guys want it.

Trigger warnings: if any of the biggies apply, kindly make a second comment, or if you can do spoiler text (Might be a welcome gesture if you share the code). Basicly I'm thinking trigger warnings should be available for people who need them, but not so open that people can be spoiled.

Seconded! It's a fandom classic and a great read.

My only concern would be whether too many people have already read it...

Dark Lord of Derkholm by Dianna Wynn Jones

it's 328 pages, would that count as "too hefty" for the first one? (Not trying to be sarcastic/snarky; I'm not actually sure how you'd like "too long" to be qualified. :3)

Agreed! What an excellent book and everyone needs to discover the magic that is Dianna Wynne Jones. I'm afraid the ending might be a bit too fluffy and neat for the more sarcastic anons and regulars here though.

Northanger Abbey or Fingersmith

[personal profile] chardmonster 2014-04-10 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Northanger Abbey. It's Jane Austen's send up of Gothic(read: spooky) literature and is in the public domain.

Fingersmith is an awesome novel about Dickensian lesbians, porn studies and the long con. It is AMAZING.

Un Lun Dun by China Mieville

It's not super popular so everyone probably won't have read it, but not rare or out of print; it's relatively short and easy to read--it's technically YA--but not childish at all, and the wordplay and subversion of tropes and bugnuts worldbuilding would be a lot of fun to talk about.

Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World by Haruki Murakami.

Summary from amazon: The last surviving victim of an experiment that implanted the subjects' heads with electrodes that decipher coded messages is the unnamed narrator of this excellent book by Murakami, one of Japan's best-selling novelists and winner of the prestigious Tanizaki prize. Half the chapters are set in Tokyo, where the narrator negotiates underground worlds populated by INKlings, dodges opponents of both sides of a raging high-tech infowar, and engages in an affair with a beautiful librarian with a gargantuan appetite. In alternating chapters he tries to reunite with his mind and his shadow, from which he has been severed by the grim, dark "replacement" consciousness implanted in him by a dotty neurophysiologist.

Genre: Speculative fiction, Science fiction

400 pages so might be too long?

Can't think of any particular trigger warnings.

What about Monster by A Lee Martinez?

It's a urban fantasy-ish, humor-ish novel, on the short side, and easy to read. It got a snappy sense of humor and the entire thing moves quickly.

To clarify: "too hefty" was just an "In general, by your own judgement" kinda thing. If you're thinking "Does this count as too hefty" it probably doesn't.

I mean you recommend romance of the three kingdoms and think "Naw, it's probably a nice light read" I'd assume you were taking the piss, but I wouldn't say No to it, however I wouldn't expect a massive amount of people to agree with you.

What about The Difference Engine? Would appeal to the history fans, the cyberpunk fans, alternate history fans, it is neither a long nor involved read, but still a lot of meat on the bones to chew over.

I nominate the Weirdstone of Brisingamen by Alan Garner.

I've been recced it for years, but not got around to reading it yet. But the summary does sound awesome.

And it's a YA book so it shouldn't be too long (288 pages).

Aw hell this is late as balls but let's put it in for the poll:

John Dies at the End by David Wong

Short version: what Pineapple Express would have been like if it was set in the World of Darkness.

Long version: Two stoner losers named David and John (not their real names) from the town of [Undisclosed], where weird and awful shit happens all the time, go to a party and buy drugs from a fake Jamaican named Robert Marley. The drug, called Soy Sauce, gets you so high you can see alternate dimensions (or ghosts, or just generally do weird shit (John stopped time once or twice), but in most cases it just kills you in terrifying ways), but also allows those alternate dimensions to see you. Most of the rest of the novel is about them rescuing a one-handed girl named Amy and her dog Molly from a possessed guy, and also their adventures in Shit Narnia. Also, John dies.

This novel is actually incredibly funny, and one day I will figure out how to run the setting as a tabletop game. It was written by one of the guys from Cracked, and sets a really good balance between creepy-ass horror and surreal humor. Also, there's a movie version that I would likely be willing to stream for the club if I can track down a copy and figure out how streaming works. No trigger warnings except for possibly excessive dick jokes.
