So calling a person "pathetic" for being upset by that kind of thing. I can understand telling them to take a break from the internet, but maybe not putting them down.

I'd love to see how and whether you'd handle it if you were mocked and shamed* by a large number of posters. Unlike OP, you could easily handle one troll, but with a bunch of them, my suspicion is that you'd pretend not to be bothered while taking it all to heart.

I honestly think it wouldn't bother him.

For better or worse, a lot of people maintain a strict separation between online and real life interactions. I suspect that noodles does not take the vast majority of internet interactions seriously; if he were mocked by the masses online, he would find humor in it rather than shame.

To hurt him, one would have to do something to him in the real world. And I don't think anyone here is willing to go to that extreme (which is a good thing, as that would be kind of obsessive and creepy).

Hey, that's not a bad thing. Besides, I think Noodly just wants to say what he think we all want to say but are too polite too. And to add to the anon above who replied to you, I know it doesn't work for everyone, but if I were in the OP's position, I'd certainly be motivated by his words, they'd be just what I need.

Sometimes it can't hurt to be nice and optimistic, at least that's the way I see it. I'm harsh and sometimes mean when I'm emotionally upset or when someone does something REALLY put of line, like the anon downthread who made a nasty comment.

but i dunno most of the time I try to be nice.

It's not that it's okay. It's that at some point, you have to learn that there are assholes in the world and that there's very little you can do about it. You can either brush them off, or you can take them to heart and give them more power.

I don't think "hey, you're an asshole" is going to stop anyone.
BUT I do think empathy can, and should be encouraged.

Calling someone an asshole is in itself encouraging assholery. But I do believe that if you encourage empathy, the desire to make people's lives easier and happier, in any small way, can be infectious.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I feel happier with my approach than I would simply calling people an asshole
