I think I'm going to keep listening to the people that the word applies to. Some hate it, some don't care, might as well avoid it for the ones who hate it since the ones who don't care aren't bothered either way.

Using variants of retarded (retards/retardation) is part of my vocation, but I don't really think that that validates the usage of the word retard. There's really no situation in which you can call someone that and not mean it as an epithet.

So yeah, I guess if you're the kind of person to use slurs you can go for it.

Yes well, good for you you're so edgy? People can use whatever words they want, it's just a matter of how you want the world to see you. I think words like "retarded" make you sound really ignorant and insulting and I personally would not be friends with someone who uses it. Especially once I've brought up my issues with it and they continue to use the word.

Awesome! Cool! Words are only insulting if you want to be insulted! I personally try to incorporate all and any slurs that I can think of. Really keeps people on their toes!

I don't think Titus can sell me on retard, but I've always found retarded a valid adjective. It's just not a battle I feel like fighting, so I save it for conversations with people I know won't care.

Well retarded actually is a valid adjective. It's medical/academic terminology.

In legal and medical contexts, yes, but it's actually being phased out of use in many of those contexts (much as the medical use of 'idiot' and similar terms was before it), so there's justification for complaining about individuals and organizations that are behind the times.

Most people don't use it as medical terminology, though.

Most people use it while pointing and laughing at other people.

I know I'm fulfilling the prophecy of all the posts above, but seriously, fuck you. Good for you that your ability to use a single word in all of the English language is worth hurting other humans. I don't even care what your justifications are or how funny or edgy you are. Who the fuck cares. I don't think you're necessarily a shitty person, but I think saying this is a pretty shitty thing to do.

I agree with his first point (disabled, not retarded) but I still feel uncomfortable with people using the word retard. IDK it just seems ... wrong to me.

On the one hand, I do think people have gotten way too sensitive about the use of the word "retard."

On the other, I kind of hate it when people get overly preachy about their right to use it.

Personally, I never stopped using it, but sometimes I do stop and consider the person I'm using the word to refer to... and if genuinely retarded people* really deserve to be lumped in the same group as that butthole on a cell phone who cut me off without warning or waving and nearly caused me to have an accident on a busy road.

*Someone diagnosed with mental retardation, or some physical and/or developmental disability that consistently interrupts one's daily life.
