What abbreviations do you always read wrong?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-12 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
For example, when I see "smh" I translate it as "so much hate" and it took me a long time to realize it was supposed to be "shaking my head". Even now it takes me a second to translate.

I'm still very disappointed to discover snk is that titan anime and not something else.

I was going to say "state abbreviations" but that's not what you are going for. But it's true. All bets are off for the "m" states.

I have a problem with the "m" states too, but moreso in the "finding the right initialism" way.

Same. Though for me whenever I read "LA" I think of Louisiana instead of Los Angeles.

I blame the fact I live near the border, and have family there that I talk to far more often than I have anything to do with the city LA.

I find American state abbreviations confusing, because I'm used to ones like QLD, NSW, VIC, TAS, ACT, SA, WA and NT. Oh, and those are all of ours! America has so damn many!

It's not "so much hate"?

...Guess I learned something new today.

ayrt

wait, is it "so much hate"? someone told me it wasn't, it was "Shaking my head" and I Googled and it seemed they were right. But if enough people believe it's "so much hate" can we just... make it have that meaning?

I think people use it both ways now! But in most cases it doesn't make much difference so ...

what the actual fuck, it doesn't mean 'so much hate'? I'm so confused right now. This is why people should just type out everything, lol.

Wait, it doesn't mean so much hate?

I'm sure there are many that I'm not in-the-know about, but for the longest time, I thought didn't know ffs stood for anything. I thought it was just the sound people made when they were frustrated.

GoT. I actually made a secret about this awhile back. Rather than "Game of Thrones," my brain takes WoT (Wheel of Time) and GoF (Goblet of Fire) and mushes them together into... Goblet of Time? It always takes me a second to correct myself.

Me too, on the SMH thing. Not an abbreviation, but I originally read "cishet" as a proper noun of some sort pronounced "kish-ette". I blame it on the fact that the people who use it don't believe in using capitalization, generally.

I always do that with SMH too, anon! Usually because I feel like it's a better fit for the situation. XD

Whenever I see OKC, I read it as Oklahoma City first and it takes me a while to remember they are probably talking about OK Cupid. It was the first meaning of that abbreviation that I learned, and I go through Oklahoma City a lot so it continues to stick in my head more.

For a long time here I read "da" as "don't agree." That was really confusing when the reply actually did agree.

Wait, I thought it was 'so much hate' too.

That, or Sydney Morning Herald, but that's pretty easy to distinguish by context. (Uh, local daily paper, heh.)

For an acronym I kept mistaking for another acronym, it's probably really good that I didn't end up doing my semester abroad at San Francisco State University (SFSU), because I kept reading it as STFU (shut the fuck up).

WHAT.

it's "shaking my head"?

I did not know this, anon! thank you!

Re: What abbreviations do you always read wrong?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-12 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it can be either one, just depending on which communities you're in. In my case, I saw it used for "so much hate" for a few good years before I saw it used for "shaking my head".

I always do a doubletake when CBT refers to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

And ever since I learned what BBC stands for OTHER than British Broadcasting System, people talking about Sherlock have become more entertaining.
