Sometimes I wish I were still capable of being surprised by that. Yes, you're right that Sam/Steve is stronger. No, that's not going to overcome the fact that Bucky's white.

People aren't being deliberately racist, I don't think, just that the parasocial headspace of slash pairings doesn't really have room for Other markers.

Pretty much all of this. I agree. It's disappointing though.

I won't argue that there's obvious unfortunate racial issues at work here, but keep in mind that Sam/Steve and Steve/Bucky offer vastly different dynamics. As anon mentioned above, Sam/Steve is more of a simple, fluffy bromance kind of thing and those ships never do as well when it comes to ones full of angst or hatesex, regardless of how white the people involved are. The only time I've ever seen the BROTP ship out-popular the angst ship is in the Free! fandom.

I definitely think Sam/Steve would present more of a "ship competition" if Sam was white, but I don't think it could've rivaled Steve/Bucky either way, between the fact that Steve/Bucky have ~history and the way Bucky's character pushes every single one of fandom's hurt/comfort buttons.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-12 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
this.

Yes, you're right that Sam/Steve is stronger. No, that's not going to overcome the fact that Bucky's white.

What.

Anon, the movie all but worshiped the Bucky/Steve. From the de-brainwashing to the "shared life experiences" line to the "till the end of the line" deathpact to the "I'm going after him" ending. You don't have to ship it or think they had the most chemistry, but don't pretend there isn't basis.

(For me personally, I didn't understand Sam's almost immediate loyalty to Steve. Still don't--the timeline just made it seem really weird to me. Of course, I'm not a huge fan of the comics, so maybe that's something that makes more sense in there.)

(Anonymous) 2014-04-12 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
lol i doubt it was deliberate but the "no natasha i'm not gonna ask out these girls, i want someone who's had similar life experiences" *ENTER BUCKY* thing is still so amusing to me.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-12 11:43 am (UTC)(link)
This. I could not believe they pulled that. Seriously? "All the guys back home are dead" and the I'm "too busy" but hold up, is that Bucky? Why yes, it is...now to devote myself to rescuing him. Come on, it was complete fanfiction material.

One of my personal favorite moments that I think deserves more appreciation is when Sam tells Steve "he's not the kind you save, he's the kind you stop" and Steve's just like yeah whatever, let's go steal my old uniform. Like, it's never even a question for him. He's gonna save Bucky or he's gonna die trying.

And boring.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-12 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Why does everything have to be about race? Most people who ship Steve/Bucky ship them because of their history as childhood friends and the way they do so much for each other, and were basically the most important person in the other's life. It just happens that they're both white. I'm all for Sam/Steve, but they've literally just met.

If it were JUST Steve/Bucky, I might agree with you. But the thing is, it's part of a bigger pattern in the MCU fandom (and most fandoms out there really) where the slightest note of connection between two white guys will overshadow any other relationship, USUALLY the relationship with someone who isn't white.

Clint/Coulson, Tony/Steve... compare those numbers to say... Coulson/Fury, Tony/Rhodey and now Steve/Sam vs. Steve/Bucky. There's a very very very clear pattern here that should be addressed.

Like Anime and Manga fandoms?

Alright, western based fandoms then. I really wouldn't know about anime and manga fandoms.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-12 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)
By all means, bring it up where there is no such reasoning, but bringing it up here seems out of the topic at hand.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-12 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
You sound white.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-12 07:06 am (UTC)(link)
is this the 90ties?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-12 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, cool. Another ship to add to the If You Don't Ship This, You're Racist List. The internet is fucking exhausting.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-12 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
I know, right? Maybe I ship things that I like and not things that I don't? Some of them involve minorities. Some of them don't.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-12 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. Never allowed to have fun and just like the things you like anymore, you gotta be reminded of how awful a person you are for liking this fictional thing and get more brownie points on your SJW cards. Never mind that there's equal (if not more) basis for Steve/Bucky as there is for Steve/Sam, nah, shipping Stucky is the exact equivalent as shipping random shit like Clint/Coulson because white guys.
