Lots of weird 20/30/40-somethings with a creepy obsession with trying to place college-age guys barely out of their teenage years into neat little boxes of sexuality and gender identity.

Welcome to fandom! Seriously, that fits so many fandoms if you hadn't specified I would have no idea who you were talking about.

Well, true, but I think the difference here is that it's a rpf with social media and easy access not only to the people they're projecting onto, but also their families, young siblings, etc. Kind of like with Supernatural RPF but targeted at younger guys.

I think you'll get that bleed over into families, siblings,e tc with any RPF fandom. Admittedly I am not involved in 1D, so maybe there's more to the creepyness you say than I know about.
