OP - yeah, good point about it being fantasy. In a lot of media, the male characters are heroic and strong, and the female ones are the... well, damsels. So it's a nice inversion to see male characters being victimized (and other male characters, given those aforementioned m/m ships being nurturing - the 'nurturer/healer' role is traditionally feminine as well) and the female characters being amazing heroic badasses.

(Also, I've always preferred Luke and want him to get All The Hugs after the encounter with Vader. Heh.)
