I started my fandom "career" with RPF fic about people in bands. I didn't realize that most people found it creepy until much later on. I still don't. The band members have stage personas that are akin to fictional characters...no one I interacted with in those fandoms was getting it confused with real life. Some of the best AU stuff I've ever read, and some of the best fic writing period has been RPF.
