the show is WAY WAY WAY better than the book, jsyk.

the book is so, so focused on precious piper that it left a really gross taste in my mouth. like yeah, i'm sure it's great that you, the pretty white lady with a university education (and certain gross prejudices) was only in there for a year and prison provided ample time for you to get fit and catch up on your reading, while you also have a city job in marketing waiting for you when you're out... seriously, it's so self-centred and went from a fairly average biography to just awful.

I haven't read the book, but she is an advocate for changing the way we treat non violent offenders, which is a good thing if her story helps other people who were less fortunate than herself.

Just because there are good aspects about the book, doesn't mean we can't/ignore criticize the bad.

For sure; didn't mean to imply otherwise. I was merely chiming in saying I like some of her ideas for prison reform; the book could well be as boring as you say, again I haven't read it.

yes, she is and i'm glad that she does advocate for it. but the book left such a sour taste in my mouth by focusing mostly on herself.

fwiw I still got that vibe from the show, or at least the first few episodes of it

I haven't read the book but I think the show is very self aware about Piper being unsympathetic.

Uh, it is a memoir, I don't know why you would expect a memoir to not focus on the person writing it.

actually, i'm perfectly okay with that. but it constantly goes on about HER privilege and what she's going through, without much self-awareness on how the other people in the prison have it worse or the social/psychological effects on prison. for someone with a private, liberal education, you'd have expected her to pick up on things like: "Some of these people are in and out of prison due to issues stemming from poverty, abuse, etc and in fact we're failing them by shutting down educational programmes in prison and not properly rehabilitating them." THAT is what the show does, and that's why I really like the show. The book does NONE of that, and is honestly too focused on Piper. That's just how I feel. :/
