Have you done time in a upper-New York minimum security women's prison, though? Because if you were in prison or jail in another state, you could write off any inaccuracies as difference between NY penitentiaries and the one you were incarcerated in.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-14 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
As I understand it, it's actually supposed to be pretty accurate. If there were differences that bugged you, you could talk about them as "I read somewhere that..." without revealing your time behind bars.

You really should give the show a try, OP. It's astoundingly well-done.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-14 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no opinion on this show, but yeah, you can always claim that you read something somewhere, or that you know someone who did time. But I also understand why you might not be comfortable talking about the subject at all.

I teach a course on Corrections, one part of which specifically deals with the differences between television/movie depictions of probation/jail/prison/parole and reality. So just say that you've taken a course like mine. :)

Isn't one of those women really a trap?

7/10, pretty good subtle troll.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-14 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not saying it is a bad thing, just I want to know which it is.

I understand completely. My friends won't shut up about it either, and I find prison shows incredibly triggering.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-15 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
But that's not what the secret is about at all. Unless this is trolling about the "triggering" bit?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-15 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Nah I think the anon was just agreeing about friends not shutting up about the show and not wanting to watch it...

(Anonymous) 2014-04-14 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
the show is WAY WAY WAY better than the book, jsyk.

the book is so, so focused on precious piper that it left a really gross taste in my mouth. like yeah, i'm sure it's great that you, the pretty white lady with a university education (and certain gross prejudices) was only in there for a year and prison provided ample time for you to get fit and catch up on your reading, while you also have a city job in marketing waiting for you when you're out... seriously, it's so self-centred and went from a fairly average biography to just awful.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-15 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't read the book, but she is an advocate for changing the way we treat non violent offenders, which is a good thing if her story helps other people who were less fortunate than herself.

Uh, it is a memoir, I don't know why you would expect a memoir to not focus on the person writing it.

I like this show but, seriously, it would be awesome if someone wrote some meta about life in real prisons and what's depicted on the show. And seconding what other people have said- you could always just lie about how you know about it.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-15 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I've never been in jail, but I can't watch the show because so many of the scenes were so similar to the things my mom would tell me about her stint working as a corrections officer (in a women's maximum security). Like, if I wanted to hear about prison, I'd just ask my mom about her day.

Oz is better.

agree, but also much much much more unrealistic.

I could do with more shanking in OITNB. And there's only been [spoiler] one drug overdose so far. I loved that shit in Oz. SO.MUCH.DRAMA.

You don't have to say you've done time. You could just as easily have worked in the prison system. No one would assume you were an inmate. At least I wouldn't.

But that might be because I work in a prison.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-15 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
Bitch about the inaccuracies as an Anon and get it out of your system. And talk about everything else with your friends.

Both HRG and Regina did bad things, though Regina is worse. I think Claire still viewing Noah as her father is reasonable but Henry not doing the same for Regina is also believable. She was not a nice person and she wasn't a particularly good mother from what we've seen in the show either.
