Oh please, just because things are relatively quiet now (in certain places, at least)? Not 20 years ago my parents were part of an actively oppressed race, so much so that they had to leave their country if they ever wanted a chance at anything. We live with the knowledge that even in the bright old USA, people can and probably will turn on us and blame us for whatever the country's ills are. Why?

Because eventually, inevitably, people will turn on the Jews. It's just what happens. The cycle has continued over thousands of years. Why do you think so many of us support Israel through thick and thin? Because we know that when they come around for us again, Israel is our only hope.

oh wow

There are mild persecution complexes and then these is this.

And there are also some really awesome Jewish people and organizations who are proud of their heritage and yet recognize that many of Israel's actions are wrong. I have a good friend who is a Rabbi and yet is a leader in the BDS movement. It is possible to be Jewish and still recognize that Israel is mostly in the wrong here.

You can recognize something is wrong in a country without wanting to completely destroy it, too.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 11:31 am (UTC)(link)
There are very few people who actually want to destroy Israel. Most people in the BDS movement accept that while Israel is absolutely a colonialist country, its as much here to say as America is. They are not calling for its destruction. They just want either Palestine to be recognized as a country with borders that are fair too or for there to be a single country where both groups are equally in the government and have equal rights and for Israel to stop what basically amounts to Apartheid.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 12:03 pm (UTC)(link)
No. BDS wants to destroy Israel as it is. Omar Baraghouti, its founder, has explicitly rejected the 2-state soltuion, and called for a 1 state solution where Jews would essentially be a minority. This IS a destruction of Israel, since Israel was created to be a Jewish homeland where Jews get the right for self determination. He also repeatedly denounced Jewish claim to Israel and to a national identity. You support BDS, you support that line of thinking. There's no way around it.

Also Israel is not a colonialist country. Nor an apartheid.

Yes it is. And characterizing changing the nature of the country to be one that meets modern standards of basic human rights as "destruction" is inaccurate at best. The idea of a country based around a single ethnic group that does not grant equal rights to other groups and specifically excludes those other groups (not just Palestinians but also African refugees), discriminates against them, destroys their homes and takes their land, have separate schools that aren't in any way equal, taken away their homes with flimsy excuses that really boil down to them being Palestinian, and made it difficult for people to reach their own homes/jobs/etc. Basically all the things that happened in the US and South Africa that were condemned and eventually ended and things that are all clear, egregious violations of international law.

Let me just say up front that I think that suicide bombing and any other targeting of civilians is wrong, and while I understand the desire to resist and fight for one's rights I personally think that violence that targets civilians is the wrong way to do it. But Israel targets civilians too, and in every other area they are completely and totally the only ones in the wrong. And no other country would be able to have laws that specifically favor one ethnic group over another (sure it happens in the US, but any law that is that overt would be struck down) and still held up as a model of human rights.

Here is a very good explanation of the actual situation from a Jewish organization: http://jewishvoiceforpeace.org/content/israeli-palestinian-conflict-101

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 01:14 pm (UTC)(link)
No it isn't. Taking a country and changing its demographic makeup as well as its entire nature despite the wishes of the majority of its citizens under the guise of "human rights" is certainly destroying it.

The idea of a country based around a single ethnic group is the reality of most of today's countries, and Israel does grant equal rights to all of its citizens. Please show me one law in Israel illegaly discriminating between people by their ethnicity. Your "separate schooling system" is laughable- the schools are separated by the students mother tongue. I'm fairly sure that if Israel would have only one schooling system, forcing all children to study in the majority language, Hebrew, you'd be crying racism over forcing Arab children to study in Hebrew. Arab citizens of Israel do not get their houses taken from them and there is nothing in Israel that is similar to Apartheid.

Israel isn't the only side that is completely and totally in the wrong in any other area, but I'm not surprised to hear that is your lopsided POV.

Here're some very good articles about the actual situation from a Palestinians writer:

And a project that's actually dedicated to truth, not to spouting baseless nonsense:

Israel is systematically destroying the native brown muslim people with the backing up of the USA, but it's not a colonialist country.

lol

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Because Arabs are natives to all of the Middle East. RIIIIIGHT. Archeological proof? Historical records? What is that? Most Palestinians have dark skin and some Jews are white, therefore Palestinians must be natives, and Jews are not. That's just how it works!
