Re: Based on #10
(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 12:43 am (UTC)(link)There's a lot to Assassin's Creed, TES, Minecraft, etc. that just doesn't come across in a youtube video or on a wiki page. There's quests that an LPer might skip that give critical context. There's in-game codex entries or books or info-dumps that you miss out on. There's the visceral feeling that some games have (vertigo, or heart-pounding action, or frustration at a puzzle or difficult boss).
I watch a lot of LPs. I've even watched LPs of games that I didn't play until after the LP was over. I love LPs and wiki pages and what-not. But it's not even close to the same experience and it's irritating when people pretend it is. It's like reading the IMDb about a movie and then saying it's your fav or something.

I'd say it's more like...watching half the episodes of a show but skipping over several key arcs and gleaning your knowledge of the arcs you skipped from the "previously on..." segments that come before each episode, and then claiming that you're able to discuss the show as a whole just as well as people who have seen the whole show.
