Based on #10

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Does anyone else have to suppress occasional impulses to think of someone as a fake fan?

I know that the OP of #10 is just as much a fan as anyone else, and has every right to love TWS on as many levels as they want, but there's this little part of me going "You didn't even like the first movie? Never mind the seventy years of history that the characters had before that? But NOW you're all in love and obsessed? You can't possibly love these characters the way I've loved them!"

Of course that's unfair and of course it's nonsense, but we all have these little uncharitable impulses sometimes, don't we? What triggers yours? "BBC Sherlock is awesome but the books are sooooo boring!", maybe? "I think the fic is hot but I'd never watch the show!", perhaps? "Why would anyone watch OLD Doctor Who, the special effects are bad and the Doctor's not hot!", perchance?

We're all anons here: admit the things you're too well-mannered to ever say out loud.

Yeeeaaaaaaaaah....people who watch the GOT series without ever having read the books tend to get on my nerves a little bit. Especially when they freak out about "spoilers"...

Re: Based on #10

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I've not had the chance to get a hold of the books myself and well, I've spoiled myself silly with regards to the books. Still, I hate it when people try to spoil for the tv series, it has changed a lot from the books so it may have happened differently in the show than what I've spoiled myself about the books. If that makes any sense.

Re: Based on #10

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
But are they claiming to be big fans? If not, surely it doesn't matter.

Re: Based on #10

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
WTF is this comment? If they are saying they're big fans, maybe it's because they ARE big fans...of the show.

I see what you're saying. I was thinking of my fandom snobbery that I'm too polite to speak aloud, but I guess that's not really all that responsive to the question posed.

Why? The books are bricks. I've read all of them but I don't begrudge the people who don't. Maybe they don't have time, maybe they just don't like reading. They're still allowed to enjoy the story and suspense.

This thread is about my stupid snobbery. I know it's stupid. I'm too polite to speak it aloud. But I just find people who watch GOT but haven't read the books to be kind of annoying. Especially the ones who name their pets/children "Khaleesi" with no notion that it's a title, not a freaking name. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's when people are so obviously in love with their own idea of what the series is/should be, more so than what it actually is. I don't suppress the thought tho-- maybe 'fake' isn't the right word, but I just can't see the point of calling yourself a fan.

I always have to remind myself that not everyone is like me when someone claims to be a fan of a show but can't remember the names of some of the main characters.

I get that way about people spelling character names wrong.

Re: Based on #10

Every week, I pick one random person who spells Cap's name as "Steve Rodgers", I track them down, and I set their computer on fire.

So be careful, people--this might be your week.

I spell names wrong. Obv., not when I write them all the time but I could easily misspell a name which I only heard and not read.

Also Cas(s).

For me I tend to knee-jerk think someone is a "fake fan" when it's people who say they're fans of a game when they've never actually played it, just read the wiki or watched an LP.

There's a lot to Assassin's Creed, TES, Minecraft, etc. that just doesn't come across in a youtube video or on a wiki page. There's quests that an LPer might skip that give critical context. There's in-game codex entries or books or info-dumps that you miss out on. There's the visceral feeling that some games have (vertigo, or heart-pounding action, or frustration at a puzzle or difficult boss).

I watch a lot of LPs. I've even watched LPs of games that I didn't play until after the LP was over. I love LPs and wiki pages and what-not. But it's not even close to the same experience and it's irritating when people pretend it is. It's like reading the IMDb about a movie and then saying it's your fav or something.

I wouldn't say it's like reading the IMDb of a movie and then saying it's your fav. LP's are a lot more like playing then that, but on the other, even *less* thorough.

I'd say it's more like...watching half the episodes of a show but skipping over several key arcs and gleaning your knowledge of the arcs you skipped from the "previously on..." segments that come before each episode, and then claiming that you're able to discuss the show as a whole just as well as people who have seen the whole show.

Re: Based on #10

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
For me, LPs or watching friends play are the only way I can experience certain games. I have really terrible hand-eye coordination and some additional visual problems that make gameplay difficult. I get that it's not the same, but I'm glad there's a way for me to enjoy games that, if I tried to play them myself, I would never get out of the first room, let alone enjoy all the twists and turns and easter eggs and scary/exciting moments.

Yep. My main fandom right now is a TV show that loves dropping tiny hints that pay off years down the road, but I have to remind myself that the people who can't even remember what happened last week are still allowed to enjoy it.

Re: Based on #10

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know how often I'd call someone a fake fan, but I feel like some people say they're huge fans without having ever... met a huge fan of that thing, or anything. So the conversation will go...

Them: Oh yeah, I love Doctor Who! It's my favorite show ever!

Me: *Mentions the Weeping Angels*

Them: ... the what now?

It's not that they're not necessarily real fans, but they're not really huge uber fans.

(Actually, I think I got the Weeping Angels and something else - no idea what - confused my first time around the Whoinverse. So there you go.)

Re: Based on #10

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not even a Doctor Who fan and I know about the Weeping Angels.

NuTrek fans, tbh. Sorry. I really do try, but I just can't help that little voice going "yeah, no, that reboot is something completely different. If I see you conflating TOS with the reboot even a little I will end you."

I guess someone who is into something with canon lgbt characters (Gunnerkrigg Court, Welcome to Nightvale) but adamantly denies that their precious super cool thing has *gasp* GAYS in it, and/or actually contacts the creator begging them to change it. But I don't know if I'd call them "fake". Stupid and homophobic, yes, but genuinely so.

Can I go the other way and say that I absolutely hate being around people who want to act like someone (me) not liking all the source material/reading all the books/reading the books in a specific order/remembering all the characters names/watching all the movies/etc etc implies that I am somehow a lesser fan?

Because I think people who act like that are just snobby, exclusionary dicks who don't want to share their fandom sandbox and/or what to feel special/superior because I don't meet some magical fan criteria. >:(

Specifically, fuck you people who say I'm not truly a sci-fi fan because I don't want to watch/read either Star Wars or Star Trek. I've dipped a toe in, I didn't care for it! There are so many more books/movies in the sea!

Well, that's just it. I DON'T think people should be looking down on you or calling you a fake fan. And I don't believe anyone in this thread thinks that.

This thread isn't about Confess Your Totally Justified Reasons For Acting Snobby. It's about Confess Your Dumb Petty Reasons For Wanting To Act Snobby. That's a very different thing.

As civilized people, we repress our urges to be cruel, to be snobby, to be selfish and petty and awful. Because they're unkind, because we cannot fully know the story of the person we want to look down upon, because we are as flawed and fallible as anyone else, and respecting our fellow creatures is the only way we can have a civilization.

But beneath all that lies the unspoken word, the uncurled lip, the buried bastard at the heart of every one of us. And sometimes it's fun to, in a private and harmless way, speak the words we'd never say to someone's face. We can't exorcise our demons of fannish gatekeepery, but we can put a leash on them and exercise them in the yard a little bit. If we don't, they might go mad, and nobody wants that.
