Man.

What a shitty, overrated play.

It's considered Shakespeare's worst and is, while maybe not hated, definitely ridiculed for its over the top violence. At least from what I've seen.

Unfortunately this has led to a lot of people trying to "reappraise" it and talk about how it has a lot of hidden qualities and it's actually really good and even though it's unpopular they can still appreciate it, and from all that it has derived a weird popularity with certain people

and no. no, it's just bad.

it's disjointed and outrageous and garish and I love it. Why would people go hunting for hidden meaning when they could just enjoy the bloody fever dream with glorious soliloquies? :/

You could honestly ask that about a lot of literature. People are desperate to find symbolism/hidden meaning. IDGI either.

I like Titus Andronicus for the same reason I like Quentin Tarantino's movies (and presumably the reason I'll like Game of Thrones if I ever get around to it). Every now and then you just want a story that's nothing but a bloodbath. And it is Shakespeare, so there are a few bits that are just really good blank verse.

I think a lot of people are disapointed with or confused by Titus Andronicus because they hear Shakespeare's name and expect something lofty and beautiful and insightful and universally applicable. But it isn't. It's just good bloody entertainment.

I like it a lot more than his other plays. It's over the top, melodramatic, but it's also entertainingly grim.

Julie Taymor DID make a pretty awesome movie from it, though.

Although I've read that it was his most popular during Shakespeare's lifetime, which amuses me. People loved blood and guts and Law & Order SVU style plots as much then as they do now.

Considering we're talking about a time when there were public executions and the heads of traitors were publicly displayed, I don't think people had any problems with stage depictions of violence.

Fuck that! Titus Andronicus is my favourite Shakespeare play (and deserves a movie adaptation that doesn't put Tamora in a weird red jumpsuit >.>). If anything, it's underrated - yours is the popular opinion, you know.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I just love plays with graphic rape and mutilation scenes.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
It's one of those things that has been called underrated so long that it has become massively overrated (with certain groups of people).

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
The RSC did an amazing production of it last year, I loved it. The Globe are doing it this year. I really don't like it on paper, I think it has to have a light touch, otherwise it's just too grim to bear.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
I definitely think it's a weak play, but it's so ridiculous (especially dat ending) I can't help but enjoy it.

The Julie Taymor movie version is fucking brilliant
