Agreed. I don't care if she was reading from David Duke's Dictionary of Racist Nicknames. Nothing she could have said was on par to what they did to her. They were just words. And as the Queen, Tamora had the power. She sic'ed her sons on her when she could have told her Titus what Lavinia said and Titus would have probably disowned the girl making a more fitting punishment than the brutal rape and mutilation.

I don't think they said in their secret that she deserved it, only that they no longer had sympathy for her. They don't like the character, they don't care what happened to her.

What happened to her, probably should have been left out of the secret, but I don't think the OP is saying that what happened to Lavinia was justifiable. In fact, I think the OP mentioned that in the secret.

Fuck that! Titus Andronicus is my favourite Shakespeare play (and deserves a movie adaptation that doesn't put Tamora in a weird red jumpsuit >.>). If anything, it's underrated - yours is the popular opinion, you know.

Racist comments do not, in any way shape or form, merit being raped, her tongue cut out and her hands cut off - with branches stuck in her wrists for added horror.

Of all the things I've seen in movies and such, seeing her standing on that stump with no tongue and no hands after her rape was probably the most horrifying thing ever, so much so that I got creepy goosepimples up and down my spine. I mean, my skin actually crawled.

So no, just no, OP.

I understand what you're saying. It didn't mean I didn't feel that the whole sequence was horrifying, but I also felt like Lavinia was kind of a jerk just like everybody except the kid. And then something horrifying happened to her.

Something I really liked about Titus was that they kind of played up Lavinia being a jerk, at least for that scene. I've seen live performances (and was in one as Tamora fuck yeah), and too often, in my experience, Lavinia is played as an angel. I mean, she's miles and miles better than everyone ELSE in the cast, but there's something to be said for making the point that even she's not really the kind of person you'd want to be friends with outside the play.

Don't mind me, but I really love Titus Andronicus.

I'm just going to be unpopular and say that it's perfectly possible to lose sympathy with Lavinia for her racism without condoning or excusing Tamara, Demetrius, and Chiron for their atrocities.
It's Shakespeare, everyone is at once horrible and likeable.

Not only is there nothing that justifies what happens to her, she goes through that, then is murdered by her father because once a woman has been raped their father should kill them. Somehow I don't think racism is the only problem here.

Also you have to put it into context, in 1600 comments about race weren't looked on in the same way, Lavinia may not be an angel, but those comments wouldn't have been a negative aspect of her character.
