Right. Because Robb/Talisa wasn't a change at all from Robb/Jeyne Westerling. (Go ahead and say "Jeyne wasn't at all interesting or important," I can always c/p my usual comment about how canonically she's got a lot going on if people aren't just skimming ahead for the Red Wedding. Sorry to be on the defensive but man am I over arguing this.) And if Shae and Tyrion turn out the same way that won't have made anything worse at all, no.

Not to mention how aging everyone up has made everyone look even dumber than they did in the books (aka Rickman Snape Characterization Syndrome). I mean underage sex, yeah, ew, also it's easier to cast older actors, but holy hell does it screw up some characterizations.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Not only the characterization. Cat being as old as her uncle is ridiculous.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, you're right. Hoster Tully's supposed to be pretty goddamn old (as old as Jon Arryn, iirc? and Walder Frey) and if his little brother is only about ten years older than Cat, really, are we supposed to believe that?

ngl I am super fine with them changing the ages. DNW

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I am for that reason! It's just Jon and Robb are still acting like 15 year olds when they look at least 18, etc.

Man. You must know some incredibly mature 18 year olds.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Don't you know that you magically mature 180o decrees right when you blow your 18th birthday cake candles.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
No, I just think for example Jon's arc makes a lot more sense when he's 15-16. Plus it doesn't make in-world sense that he's still running around Winterfell as one of the kids at that age, anyway, considering his bastard status. It seems way more common for acknowledged bastards who are of age to be useful nearby but not all up in their natural parents' shit. (The Sand Snakes, Ramsay Snow [at first], Mya Stone, Edric Storm, etc.)

idek if you're even in this fandom but I thought I'd mention this anyway.

Robb def. acts older than 15-16 but he's been raised to become Lord of Winterfell so I don't think that's too surprising. Cat's arc makes more sense to me when she's a relatively young mother (around early thirties) than in her forties. Just examples.

No, it's still pretty accurate. Most of the young characters in the books acted far older than their ages. If anything, the show ages are closer to the book characterizations.

Also, less gross, so it's got that going for it.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
The show runners literally said they aged up the kids because it was "too creepy" even for HBO come on.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
And I said "I am [okay with them upping the ages] for that reason" so idk what you want me to say. It's a hard problem to solve, but the ripple effect has frustrated me. What can I say, ASOIAF has been one of my main fandoms for a while, and GoT is a weird splinter version that's kind of like Star Trek AOS. These are recognizable characters and a recognizable setting, but there are definitely changes, and there's a reason fandomers make a point of distinguishing which they're writing.

I just get miffed at people judging things in the show that make sense in the books and throwing shade at the books for it :(

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Me too, man. I don't even know how you can complain about that. Also, thinking that everyone being older makes them look dumb (due to them still acting like their original selves) implies you want their behaviors to be different in the show, which means things'd have to change even further.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. Still not a purist. I'd like them to have cast just slightly younger. Jon and Robb act like 15 year olds while looking 18-20, and I'd like them to at least passably look like they're under 18. No changes necessary.

I'm mostly just over people complaining about how dumb Robb is when it makes way more sense for a 15 year old (who just found out about his brothers' apparent deaths, btw, canonically) to have randomly slept with and married some girl than a 17+ year old lord of a holding.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
And Dany, looking under 18, doing those scenes? Nope, not here for that.

Maybe that's why they changed his storyline? He's too old to marry some girl he randomly slept with, so instead he ~fell in love~

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 06:34 am (UTC)(link)
Robb married Jeyne because he didn't want to leave her with a bastard child because he knows the fallout that has firsthand. Basic sentimentality that got him killed, unfortunately.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-16 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Even those change are still nowhere near to "omg completely butchering!!" the source material jesus christ.

Purists, man.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Hey I never said "completely butchering." I just don't agree that it's a perfect adaptation, because it's messed some shit up. I don't see why it has to be black and white either HORRIBLE BUTCHERING or PERFECT ADAPTATION. ???

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
When they change almost everything about your favorite character, when they remove most of his memorable scenes or change them, you have the right to be mad.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Then you're expected to be happy because AT LEAST THERE'S A SHOW AND MOST OF IT'S RECOGNIZABLE.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-17 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
I know, I know. I love the show, I like it a lot, but then from time to time I remember how excited I was about watching certain scenes that never happened, and I rage. But most of the time I'm fine.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-18 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
...so Robb married Jeyne Westerling in the books because he ~fell in love~ with the beautiful & exotic girl who isn't like other girls at all! And discarded his duty because... yeah, he wanted to marry the girl he decided on. Yep, that's how it happened.
